Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The teacher's handwritten label of 1895, from the Karaabinsk school in the Ural uezd, reads Растетъ на сорныхъ мѣстахъ повсюду въ дикомъ состояніи. (grows in weedy places everywhere in a wild state), and gives the local name киндер шагыр (kinder shagyr), marked as Kirghiz. It gives no use and no note on cultivation, and everywhere is the collector's impression, not a count. The plant grew outside cultivation. The accession is classified Feral, by inference from the label; the label does not say whether the plants descended from a crop. A single gathering does not establish a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned. An earlier version of this note classified the sheet as Other because a single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from the holder's image (3484 × 5168 pixels).

  • First label. Stamp Herbarium Universitatis Mosquensis. / stamped type 1895. Уральск. обл. и у., Караабинская / русско-киргизская школа. / А. Кулясов. учит.
  • Second label (by hand, pre-1918 spelling). № 183. Конопля. / „киндер шагыр" (кирг.). / Растетъ [two words struck out, the first по] / на сорныхъ мѣ- / стахъ повсюду въ ди- / комъ состояніи.
  • Small's slip (typed). Cannabis sativa L. / E. Small, Canada Agriculture, Aug. 1975.
  • The local name is transcribed as written; both readings agree on it.
  • The stamped number 64789 near the barcode is a registration number of the herbarium, not a field number.
  • A pencilled 1973 in the lower right corner, in the hand seen on nearly every sheet of this series in the herbarium, says nothing about its purpose and is not used.

Georeferencing

No point is given. The label names the Karaabinsk Russian-Kirghiz school in the Ural Oblast and uezd and no other place. Places named Karaoba (Қараоба, Караоба) were found at five points in West Kazakhstan and Atyrau regions: a river and its valley in Börli district (OpenStreetMap ways 39294948 and others), a locality in Karatobe District (node 4357085192), a village in Kaztal District (relation 17383352), and two neighbourhoods, in Kaztal and Inder districts (nodes 11759030008 and 11773859951). No source found names the school or ties it to one of them, so the name resolves to more than one place, and no province is entered.

Editorial treatment

Local name. The local name field keeps the label's киндер шагыр, with a transliteration; the label marks it (кирг.), Kirghiz.

Taxon. The label names the plant in Russian only; the infobox takes Small's 1975 determination, the only Latin name on the sheet, and names him as the determiner.

Collector. The collector field keeps the label's and the catalogue's A. Kulyasov. No source read gives his full name, which is not linked.

Place. The locality keeps the label's school and uezd. The label does not say the plant was gathered at the school; it gives the school as the sender's place.

Source discrepancies

  • The catalogue gives neither the school nor the number 183, nor the local name.
