Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The expedition's label places male plants at Ключи. Поле конопли (Klyuchi; a hemp field) in Kamchatka on 26 June 1908, and a second slip repeats Поле конопли in pencil: hemp was being grown at the place the labels call Klyuchi. They give no use. Drug-type cannabis from different regions began to be cross-bred, and its seed carried into old growing areas, in the 1970s (McPartland and Small 2020, pp. 84–85), so a hybrid origin is not considered for a sheet gathered in 1908. The accession is classified Landrace, by inference from the labels. The sheet does not show what became of the crop or whether its seed survives, and no conservation priority is assigned. An earlier version of this note classified the sheet as Other because nothing is known of the seed, its source or what became of the crop.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from the holder's image (3793 × 5451 pixels). The page states only what the readings agree.

  • Label 1 (printed form of the expedition). Камчатская Экспедиція Ф. П. Рябушинскаго. / by hand Cannabis sativa L / Ключи. Поле конопли and the male sign / printed Камчатка. / Бассейнъ рѣки. (blank) / Зона. (blank) / 1908 г. + by hand 26/VI / printed Собралъ В. Комаровъ. / V. Komarov Iter Kamczaticum I. / by hand Собралъ Э. and a surname. A pencilled d at the top left.
  • Label 2 (printed slip КАМЧАТКА). Pencil: the male sign / Ключи / Поле конопли / 26/VI; printed 1908 г. V. / Сбиралъ + a surname in pencil.
  • Readings that differ. The surname after the handwritten Собралъ Э. was read Б[…]евъ and Егаевъ (or Тегаевъ); the pencilled surname on the second slip Б[…] and Бегин (or Безлин). Neither is agreed, and the page names neither.
  • The stamped number 119803 near the barcode is a registration number of the herbarium, not a field number.
  • A pencilled 1973 in the lower right corner, in the hand seen on nearly every sheet of this series in the Moscow depository, says nothing about its purpose and is not used.

Georeferencing

No point is given: the labels' place does not resolve to one object. They write Ключи at the head of the line, which is both a place name and the ordinary Russian word for springs, and give no river basin (the printed line for it is blank). The one settlement of the name in Kamchatka, the village of Klyuchi on the Kamchatka river (OpenStreetMap node 360831024, Ust-Kamchatsky District), lies some 470 km by road north of Petropavlovsk, while Komarov's own dated sheets of the same expedition come from the valley of the Paratunka, near Petropavlovsk, on 8 and 10 July 1908, twelve days after this gathering; an expedition sheet of 26 June from Klyuchi may be right, but no itinerary read places the expedition there that day. The herbarium's database publishes the point 52.986372, 158.266015 and marks it as not taken from the label; it lies near the village of Paratunka, 406 km from Klyuchi, and is not used. The province field takes Kamchatka Krai, which both places lie in.

Editorial treatment

Classification. The labels say the plants were gathered in a hemp field, so hemp was grown there. The accession is still classified Other: one gathering of male plants from a field says nothing of the seed or of a continuing crop.

Place in the title and locality. Both take the labels' Klyuchi as written; see Georeferencing for why the village of that name is not taken as identified.

Collector. The collector field takes the catalogue's V. Komarov, the name printed on the label as the series' collector. A second hand adds Собрал Э. and a surname, and the second slip another name after Сбирал; the person who gathered the plants may be one of them, and the readings do not agree on either. The expedition's leader was Vladimir Leontyevich Komarov: the English Wikipedia lists among his expeditions Kamchatka (1908–09) (re-read 12 October 2026), and the label's V. Komarov Iter Kamczaticum I is the printed series name of that expedition, as on the sheets of 8 and 10 July 1908 described in the LE Collections Guide (Missouri Botanical Garden, collections 87/1211 and 87/1219).

Source discrepancies

  • The catalogue's point lies near Paratunka, 406 km from the village of Klyuchi, and is marked as not taken from the label (see Georeferencing).
