Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The label places the plant on waste ground at Burnihat, 7 feet tall. The plant grew outside cultivation. The accession is classified Feral, by inference from the label; it does not say whether the plant descended from a crop. A single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from Naturalis's image (1092 × 1920 pixels). Both readings agree: printed PLANTS OF ASSAM, INDIA / DISTRIBUTED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN / Cannabis sativa L.; by hand Cream, 7 ft, waste ground.; printed Burnihat, Khasi Hills, 200 ft. / WALTER N. KOELZ, NO. 22862 / 4 JUNE 1949. A stamp reads 200640.

Georeferencing

The point 26.05, 91.87 is the town of Byrnihat, OpenStreetMap node 6286817795, in Ri-Bhoi District, Meghalaya, on the Assam border. No source read spells the label's Burnihat as Byrnihat for this place, though English Wikipedia's article on the ONGC Tripura Power Company writes Burnihat in Meghalaya; the identification rests on the spelling and on the label's Khasi Hills: Ri-Bhoi became a district in 1992, carved from East Khasi Hills. SRTM gives 68 m at the town's node, within 7 m of the label's 200 feet (61 m), and the agreement supports the identification. The point places the gathering at the town, not at a spot within it. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 3 km.

Editorial treatment

Place. The locality field takes the label's spelling, Burnihat; the province and district fields are today's, for the town the page identifies. The catalogue's Assam is the province of the label's time: the Khasi Hills were a district of Assam until Meghalaya was formed from it.

Elevation. The label's 200 feet is stored as 61 m.
