Sources
The publisher's preface says Markevych died in June 1860, before the book appeared.
- Klynovetska (1913), Страви й напитки на Україні (Kyiv and Lviv), p. 44, recipe 252, "Хоми", cited from the 1991 facsimile reprint (Kyiv: Chas), which keeps the 1913 pages. The recipe follows Markevych's step by step, in Ukrainian. The reprint's editorial commentary (p. 185) glosses khomy as pea fritters or pampushky.
The Chubynsky passage is not cited on the page.
The hemp seed is in the tolokno served with the cakes, not in the cakes.
Is it cannabis?
- Markevych, Klynovetska and Hrinchenko name hemp seed (конопляное сѣмя, конопляне сім'я) as an ingredient of the cakes. Savych names it as the ingredient of tolokno. Hemp is Cannabis sativa.
Title and other names
- Khomy romanises the Ukrainian хоми. Redirects: хоми (Klynovetska, Hrinchenko, Savych) and хомы (Markevych's spelling).
Gorohlianyky
- The English Wikipedia article Gorohlianyky cites Savych 1947, pp. 55–56, for pea cakes served with hemp-seed flour. Those pages print the recipe as khomy; no recipe in the book is headed горохляники.
- Klynovetska's recipe 367, горохвяники (p. 61), is made of pea flour with salt and soda and has no hemp in it. The 1991 commentary (p. 190) calls горохвяники a dish like khomy and refers to recipe 252.
- For that reason Gorohlianyky and Horokhvianyky are not redirects to this page.
