Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The label places a male plant in the Mendygara raion of the Kustanai Oblast in August 1957, in a Канава в пос. Аксуат. (a ditch in the settlement of Aksuat). The address names the state farm Kamensk-Uralsky, but the habitat is a ditch in the settlement, not a farm crop. It gives no use and no note on cultivation. The name Cannabis ruderalis on the label is the botanist's determination from the specimen, not a record of where the plant grew. The plant grew outside cultivation. The accession is classified Feral, by inference from the label; the label does not say whether the plants descended from a crop. A single gathering does not establish a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned. An earlier version of this note classified the sheet as Other because a single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from the holder's image (3629 × 5268 pixels). The page states only what the readings agree, except where noted.

  • Printed form. ГЕРБАРИЙ МОСКОВСКОГО УНИВЕРСИТЕТА / им. Д. П. Сырейщикова / Собр., Опр. / 108—30000.
  • By hand. Cannabis ruderalis Janisch ♂ / Кустанайская обл., Мендыгаринский р-н, / з/с Каменск-Уральский. Канава / в пос. Аксуат. / 10/VIII 1957 г. / Карташева / Н. Н. Каден.
  • Small's slip (typed). Cannabis sativa L. subsp. sativa / E. Small, Canada Agriculture, Aug. 1975.
  • Earlier slip (typed, partly under Small's). Cannabis sativa L. / RB 180.
  • Readings that differ. The raion was read Мендыгаринский both times, the second time with Мендыкаринский as an alternative; the state farm's name Каменск-Уральский was read alike, the second time as uncertain in its middle letters; Канава (ditch) was read alike, the second time with alternatives. з/с is read as the usual abbreviation of зерносовхоз (grain state farm); the label does not spell it out.
  • A pencilled 1973 in the lower right corner, in the hand seen on nearly every sheet of this series in the herbarium, says nothing about its purpose and is not used.

Georeferencing

The point 53.90, 64.69 is the village of Aksuat, OpenStreetMap node 1643943799, in Mendykara District, Kostanay Region. The label names Aksuat as a settlement (пос. Аксуат) of the Kamensk-Uralsky state farm in the Mendygara raion. The Russian Wikipedia gives the district's present name, Mendykara, and says that Aksuat belonged to the Kamenskuralsky rural okrug until 2019, which agrees with the state farm's name on the label; the village of Kamenskuralskoye lies 19 km to the west. Other places called Aksuat in OpenStreetMap lie in other regions and are not used. SRTM gives 94 m; the label gives no altitude. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 3 km.

Editorial treatment

Collector. The collector field takes the label's and catalogue's Kartasheva, which gives no initial. The determiner field takes the label's Н. Н. Каден, N. N. Kaden. Neither is linked.

Taxon. The infobox takes Kaden's Cannabis ruderalis Janisch.; Small's 1975 determination is reported in the article.

Source discrepancies

  • The catalogue gives E. Small and August 1975 as the determination, under the name Cannabis sativa L.; the slip itself gives Cannabis sativa L. subsp. sativa.
