Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The label places a cannabis plant near Bartaz in the Araks valley in July 1932. It gives no habitat, no use and no note on cultivation, and the variety name is the determiner's judgement from the specimen. A single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from the holder's image (3600 × 5310 pixels). The page states only what the readings agree.

  • Printed label as on Karjagin s.n., Minjivan (1932), with the printer's line Тип. «Красный Восток», Баку. № 5321-6000.
  • By hand. Cannabis ruderalis Jan. / v. transcaucasica Nik. / Transcaucasia, Azerbajdzhan, distr. Zangelan, / prope Bartaz. In valle fl. Araxis / 23 VII 1932 г. № (blank) / Leg. I. Karjagin / Det. A. Grossheim.
  • Readings that differ. The place was read Bartaz and Bartoz (with Bartaz allowed); a third look could not tell the a from an o. The page uses Bartaz, the name of the place that exists there. The day was read 23 twice, with 25 allowed once.
  • The stamped number 7513 near the barcode is a registration number of the herbarium, not a field number.
  • A pencilled 1973 in the lower right corner, in the hand seen on nearly every sheet of this series in the herbarium, says nothing about its purpose and is not used.

Georeferencing

The point 38.98, 46.59 is the village of Bartaz on the left bank of the Bartaz river, OpenStreetMap node 1355395865, in Zangilan District (SRTM 633 m). A second cluster of objects named Bartaz, a locality and a military area beside the Horadiz-Aghband railway, lies 5 km to the east-south-east (way 772419054, SRTM 348 m), lower down towards the Aras; the label's valley of the Araks fits either, and the uncertainty covers both. The herbarium's database publishes the point 38.89611, 46.572421 for this sheet; it lies 9.5 km south-south-west of both Bartaz clusters and is not used. The label gives no altitude. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 6 km.

Editorial treatment

Two gatherings. As for the Minjivan sheet of 18 July, which carries the same registration number: the days and places differ.

Taxon and people as for that page.

Source discrepancies

  • The catalogue files the sheet as Cannabis sativa var. ruderalis (Janisch.) S.Z.Liou; the label's own determination is Cannabis ruderalis Jan. var. transcaucasica Nik..
  • The catalogue gives no locality; its point, 9.5 km from Bartaz, is set out under Georeferencing.
