Page scope
Kaghan Valley is a Growing Area in the Lesser Himalayas (Pakistan) growing region. It treats the cannabis of the valley of the Kunhar river in Mansehra District, as the district flora of 1993 and a survey of the valley in 2012–13 record it.

Discussion

Why the area is on the map

  • Imtiaz-ul-Haq and Hussain (1993) record the plant as growing wild throughout Mansehra district, of which Balakot tehsil was a part, and used for charas.
  • Kayani and colleagues (2017) collected the plant in the valley on their survey of March 2012 to March 2013 (voucher SK/KV/0016).
  • Two seed lots from Shugran (Shogran, one of the survey sites of Kayani and colleagues) are held by the U.S. National Plant Germplasm System.

Growing status

  • The status is Active, on the 2012–13 collection, in a valley where the 1993 flora records the plant growing wild throughout the district. No source says the growth has ended.
  • Kayani and colleagues do not say where in the valley the plant was collected, or whether it grew wild or was sown. The 1993 flora does not name places for it below the district.

Name and border

  • The name is the one Kayani and colleagues use: the catchment of the Kunhar, "commonly known as" the Kaghan Valley.
  • The border follows Balakot Tehsil as mapped in OpenStreetMap (relation 16532692). Kayani and colleagues give the valley about 1,627 km², from a 2004 thesis; the tehsil is larger, about 2,400 km², and the border takes about 170 km² more where it was fitted to its neighbours, among them Kohistan (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), so that the places meet edge to edge.
  • The rule that leaves out ground above 4,000 m, bare ground and ice moves the line by less than 0.5 per cent here once the high valleys are kept to their ridges, so the tehsil line is kept.
  • The point in the infobox is a point inside the border near its centre.

Accessions and news inside the border

  • NPG-PAK-UNK-0020230004 and NPG-PAK-UNK-0020260002, the Shugran lots, are filed under this area. The donor's notes describe the first as a charas landrace considered wild or feral; the donor is unsure whether the second differs from it.

Sources

  • Imtiaz-ul-Haq and Hussain (1993). The district description (p. 63) and the entry for Cannabis sativa (p. 70).
  • Kayani and colleagues (2017). The study area (p. 128), the survey sites (p. 129) and entry 16 (p. 130). The paper prints "Paris" among the survey sites; the article gives it as Paras, the village on the Kunhar.

Other reports

  • Two herbarium sheets collected by U. Schickhoff at Malkandi (1990) and Nuri (1994) in the valley carry no habitat and are not used.
  • A checklist of the medicinal plants of the Siran valley (2006) and a thesis on the flora of Kaghan (2009) could not be read.
