Sources
- Dutt, The Materia Medica of the Hindus (1877), p. 240, from the Wellcome Collection scan of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh copy. The Sanskrit text is in footnote 1 on that page.
- Abhilas Chandra Mukerjee's evidence to the Indian Hemp Drugs Commission (vol. IV, witness 63, p. 169) gives the recipe in Dutt's words with "(vide Bhaba Prakas)" added. It is the same text, so it is not a second witness to the composition. Mukerjee writes "fried leaves of bhang" where Dutt writes "fried leaves of Cannabis sativa".
- Tavhare and Acharya (2017), table 1, no. 34 (p. 61), and the reference it cites (no. 22, the Bṛhat Nighaṇṭu Ratnākara, p. 75).
Is it cannabis?
Dutt gives the recipe in his article on Cannabis sativa and names the plant twice in it: "fried leaves of Cannabis sativa" as an ingredient and "the leaves of Cannabis Indica" as one of the soaking fluids.
Where the sources differ
- Dutt gives a dose of about half a drachm with honey, for indigestion and loss of appetite with nausea and vomiting. Tavhare and Acharya give four māṣa with jaggery and ginger, for ajīrṇa, from the Bṛhat Nighaṇṭu Ratnākara. Mukerjee attributes the recipe to the Bhāvaprakāśa. Whether the two texts carry the same formula is not settled by the sources cited.
Not stated
- The plant names are Dutt's of 1877 (Moringa pterygosperma, Plumbago rosea, Wedelia calendulacea). The article gives no modern equivalents, since none of the sources cited gives them.
- Whether the pill is still made is not shown by the sources cited.
