Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The label names China and a collector, Iwan, and nothing else: no place, date, habitat, use or note on cultivation. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read from GBIF's cached copy of the holder's image (2,000 pixels wide).

  • Printed label. HERBIER E. DRAKE.
  • Old label. Herbarium Richard[?] (red ink; the second word read with doubt) / Chine / Legit Iwan.

Georeferencing

No point is given: the label names China and no place within it.

Editorial treatment

Collector. The collector field keeps the label's Iwan. He is not identified. The Harvard botanist index has one collector named only Iwan, with the note Malay Pen. (1846), and nothing ties him to China or to this sheet. The name stays in plain text.

Herbaria. Herbier E. Drake is read as the herbarium of Emmanuel Drake del Castillo (1855–1904), which went to the Paris museum after his death (French Wikipedia; Harvard botanist index). That herbarium was largely the Franqueville herbarium, itself formed from the Richard, Steudel and Franchet herbaria, so the red-ink Herbarium Richard fits a sheet that passed through it. Both labels say where the sheet was kept, not who Iwan was or when he collected.

Title. The sheet carries no number, place or date: the title takes s.n. and (s.d.).
