Discussion
Sources
- The area rests on one sentence of J. H. Collens's A Guide to Trinidad (2nd ed., 1888), p. 210, in his chapter on La Brea and Cedros: "Before the prohibitive but highly necessary tax was imposed upon the cultivation of Ganja, a great deal was produced in Icacos." The tax is the licence duty of Ordinance No. 13 of 1885.
- Jamie Banks (2021) writes that cannabis was "abundantly cultivated across Trinidad, particularly in Cedros" (p. 66). His note 60 (p. 78) gives Collens p. 210 as the source and quotes it as "a great deal [of cannabis] was produced in Icasos". "Icasos" is a misspelling of Icacos, and the quotation leaves out Collens's opening words, which place the production before the tax. Banks's "Cedros" rests on the same sentence: Icacos is in the Cedros district.
- The page covers Icacos as Collens names it, not the whole Cedros peninsula.
Growing status
- The status is Historical. Collens puts the growing at Icacos before 1885; he does not say whether it went on after the tax, and he gives no year when it began. The infobox leaves the first and last years blank.
- The colony's Protector of Immigrants reported that the licence duty "practically put a stop" to growing and use for several years (quoted by the Indian Hemp Drugs Commission, 1894, p. 271). That is a statement about the whole colony, not about Icacos.
Map point
- 10.0456, -61.9140 is the village of Icacos as OpenStreetMap places it. It marks the area, not a field.
Plants
- Neither Collens nor Banks names a local variety or landrace of Icacos.
