Evidentiary scope
The field form on the two Beijing sheets gives the habitat road side for a plant gathered at Peitaiho, Hopei on 20 June 1930, and the New York catalogue gives Roadside. The New York label itself gives no habitat. No label gives a use or a note on cultivation. The plant grew outside cultivation. The accession is classified Feral, by inference from the field form; it does not say whether the plants descended from a crop. A single gathering does not establish a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned. Earlier versions of this note classified the sheet as Other, because the New York label gives no habitat, and then as Feral on the catalogue's word, before the field form was read.
Label reading
Read from the garden's image as relayed by GBIF's image cache (2000 × 3000 pixels).
- Label (printed, bilingual, completed by hand): 國立北平研究院植物學研究所標本室贈 / DISTRIBUTED FROM / HERBARIUM OF INSTITUTE OF BOTANY / NATIONAL ACADEMY OF PEIPING, CHINA. / Cannabis sativa L. / Loc. Hopei: Peitaiho / Coll. W.Y.Hsia Field No. 1923 / Date June 20, 1930 Det. by (blank).
- Second slip. Cannabis sativa L. / Determinavit (unsigned).
- Beijing, read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's images (PE 00557918, 1,009 × 1,440 pixels; PE 00557921, 1,009 × 1,440 pixels). On both sheets, the field form (printed FLORA OF CHINA, typed): Field No. H.1923 / Date 20/6/1930 / Locality Peitaiho, Hopei / Habitat road side / Family Moraceae / Name Cannabis sativa L. / Collector W.Y.Hsia; tag 1923. PE 00557918 also carries the distribution label of the New York sheet, faint: Cannabis sativa L. / Loc. Hopei: Peitaiho / Coll. W.Y.Hsia Field No. 1923 / Date June 20, 1930. PE 00557921 carries the label of the Herbarium Academiae Nationalis Pekinensis: Hopei: Peitaiho June 20, 1930 / Leg. W.Y.Hsia (1923). Det. W.Y.Hsi[a]. The two readings agree.
- Yangling sheet (WUK0001285), read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image (WUK0001285, 990 × 1,440 pixels). Typed Flora of China form: Field No. H.1923 / Date 20/6/1930 / Locality Peitaiho, Hopei / Habitat road side / Name Cannabis sativa L. / Family Moraceae / Collector W.Y.Hsia. Label of the Herbarium Academiae Nationalis Pekinensis: Cannabis sativa Linn. / Hopei: Peitaiho / June 20, 1930 / Leg. W.Y.Hsia (1923). Det. W.Y.Hsia. Tag: 1923 in pencil. Stamps: Hg Cl₂ and the stamped sheet number; 標本已錄 (specimen recorded); the round herbarium stamp of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (中國科學院 植物標本章). The readings agree.
Georeferencing
The coordinate, 39.82, 119.48, is Wikidata's point for Beidaihe (Q814657, which carries the alias Peitaiho), 39.82406, 119.47964, rounded to two decimals; SRTM gives 30 m there. It stands for the seaside town the label names, not for a collection site in it. The province field takes Hebei; Beidaihe is a district of Qinhuangdao. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 5 km.
Editorial treatment
Collector. The collector field keeps the label's W. Y. Hsia. The Harvard botanist index and Wikidata give him as Hsia Wei-ying (夏纬瑛, 1896–1987), who collected in Hopei and neighbouring provinces from 1929 to 1933, and the prose links that form.
Three sheets, one accession. The Beijing sheets share the number, date, place and collector with the New York sheet. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so its sheets are cited here and not shown.
Four sheets, one accession. The New York, Beijing and Yangling sheets share the collector, the number, the place and the date; the Yangling form gives the habitat road side, as the Beijing forms do. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so its sheets are cited here and not shown.
Source discrepancies
- The New York label gives no habitat; the field form on the Beijing sheets gives road side, and the New York catalogue Roadside.
- The Chinese Virtual Herbarium lists the Yangling sheet twice, under two record numbers with the same image (WUK0001285 also as record be2117e2); the page cites the record that carries the sheet's barcode.
