Discussion
Why Hispar is a growing area
- The page rests on one seed collection that names the valley: seed from the 2023 harvest, sold by The Real Seed Company as Hispar Valley and deposited by its collector in the United States genebank as G 33869.
- The seller's listing names no village or farmer, and the seed came through an intermediary. No other source read says that cannabis is grown in the Hispar valley.
- The status is Active because the collection was made in 2023.
Extent and border
- The map border is approximate and is drawn on the terrain. It takes the basin of the Hispar River above its junction with the Gharesa stream, and keeps only the ground below 3,800 m that joins the village of Hispar. That leaves out the glaciers and high ground above the valley floor.
- The border was not drawn from the collection's coordinates, which are given to two decimals only.
- The area figure in the infobox is rounded from the border.
Sources
- Setting. Paul and colleagues (2017) describe the Hispar Glacier and its 2015-2016 surge. Gardner and Hewitt (1990) place the Bualtar Glacier and the Hopar villages lower down the same valley.
- Cultivation. The seller's listing, as it stood in September 2026, is used only for what it says about its own seed. The genebank entry, as it stood in October 2026, gives the date it was received and no narrative of the collection.
- Medicinal use. Salim and colleagues (2019) record cannabis among the medicinal plants of Gilgit-Baltistan, with its seed used in Nagar and Hunza. Their survey is not specific to the Hispar valley.
What the sources do not cover
- No source read describes cannabis fields, growers or a growing season in the Hispar valley itself, apart from the seller's listing.
