Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The labels give the place, the altitude, the date and the plant's height. They name no habitat, use or note on cultivation. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image of the sheet (WUK0001281, 990 × 1,440 pixels).
- Field form (printed LABORATORY OF BOTANY / NATIONAL ACADEMY OF PEIPING / FLORA OF CHINA, typed): Field No. Hao 825 / Date 3/8/1930 / Locality Shangwuchuang, Sining, Kokonor / Altitude 2900 m. / Height 2 ft. / Collector K.S.Hao.
- Herbarium label (HERBARIUM ACADEMIÆ NATIONALIS PEKINENSIS / FLORA CHINENSIS, typed): Cannabis sativa L. / Kokonor: Sining, Shangwuchuang / Aug. 3, 1930 / Leg. K.S.Hao (827) Det. K.S.Hao.
- Tag in pencil, written sideways: 825. Stamps: Hg Cl₂ and the stamped sheet number; 標本已錄 (specimen recorded); the round herbarium stamp of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (中國科學院 植物標本章).
The two readings agree. One marks the tag's 825 uncertain, as it is written sideways.
Georeferencing
Shangwuchuang is read as Shangwuzhuang (上五庄), a town of Huangzhong District, Xining: the identification rests on the sound of the name (Wade-Giles chuang is pinyin zhuang) and on the label's Sining and Kokonor, and no source read gives the spelling. The point 36.83, 101.42 is the town's place node in OpenStreetMap (node 3311530585), the point of Hao 827 (1930), gathered at the same place on the same day. SRTM gives 2,606 m there against the label's 2,900 m; Wikidata's second point for the town (Q10867183), about 3 km to the north, lies at 2,908 m, so the label's altitude fits the town's higher ground. The point stands for the town, not a spot within it. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 5 km.
Editorial treatment
Two numbers, a separate gathering. The field form and the tag give 825; the typed herbarium label gives 827, the number of Hao 827 (1930), from the same place and day. The sheet holds female plants with seeds, where the Yangling sheet numbered 827 on every element holds male stems. The page follows the form and the tag, written in the field, and takes the sheet as a gathering of its own.
Collector. The collector field keeps the label's K. S. Hao. He is Hao Kin-shen (郝景盛), born in 1903 or 1904: the Harvard botanist index gives 1904 and Chinese Wikipedia 1903, and they disagree on his death (1965 in the index, 1955 in Wikidata and Chinese Wikipedia). The index lists his collecting in Gansu, Hebei, Henan, Qinghai and Sichuan. The prose links Hao Kin-shen.
Province. Kokonor is the Mongol name for the Qinghai region; Qinghai became a province in 1928, with Xining as its capital. The province field takes Qinghai.
Elevation. The elevation field stores the label's 2,900 m.
Image. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so the page cites each sheet's image and shows none.
Source discrepancies
- The herbarium label gives the number 827; the field form and the tag give 825.
- The Chinese Virtual Herbarium lists the sheet under the number 825 with no province, and its second listing (record be2126a2) under 827, in Qinghai.
