Discussion

Sources

  • Dal Martello, Min, Stevens, Qin and Fuller (2024), Vegetation History and Archaeobotany 33: 503–518 (open access): the site, its coordinates and elevation, the number and context of the cannabis seeds, the measurements of thirty seeds and the scheme they are read against, and the authors' interpretation.
  • Xue, Dal Martello, Qin, Stevens, Min and Fuller (2022), Archaeological Research in Asia 30: 100364: the report on the plant remains of the 2008 excavation, with the excavation history, the three phases and their layers, the sampling, the counts of cannabis seeds by phase and the other crops. The freely available copy, in UCL Discovery, is the authors' manuscript dated April 2021 and marked as under review; its wording may differ in small ways from the printed article.

Source discrepancies

  • Date range of the site. Dal Martello and colleagues give 1650 to 400 BCE in their abstract and 1600 to 400 BCE in their text and table. Xue and colleagues give 1600 to 400 BCE.
  • Date of the cannabis. Dal Martello and colleagues' table of archaeological seeds gives the site's whole range, 1600 to 400 BCE, for the Haimenkou cannabis. Xue and colleagues' counts place all of it in phases I and II, 1600 to 1100 BCE, with none from phase III. The infobox follows the counts.
  • Mean width. Dal Martello and colleagues give the mean width of the thirty measured seeds as 2.2 mm in their text and 2.643 mm in their Table 3; the length, 3.39 mm, agrees.

Infobox values

  • Coordinates. As both papers print them, after Min (2013); the template rounds them to 26.47, 99.92.
  • Dates of the find. 1600 to 1100 BCE: phases I and II, the phases that yielded the cannabis.
  • Dating method. Radiocarbon and stratigraphy: the phases were dated by accelerator mass spectrometry on charred annual plants, and the seeds are dated by the layers they came from. The seeds were not dated directly.
  • Analyses. Morphology and microscopy: measurement of thirty seeds, and scanning electron microscopy of one seed and its hilum.
  • Period. Neolithic to Bronze Age, after Xue and colleagues' names for the three phases. Dal Martello and colleagues' title calls the site Bronze Age.
  • Growing region. The site lies within the Yunnan growing region, at 2,190 m.

Georeferencing

Both papers print the position 26.466914° N, 99.919778° E. Wikidata (Q67932718, Haimenkou Site) gives 26.4695° N, 99.9188° E, about 0.3 km away, and OpenStreetMap's village of Haimenkou in Jianchuan County (node 6630646473) lies at 26.4660° N, 99.9177° E, about 0.2 km away. The printed position falls in Jianchuan County, Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, as both papers state. Éloise 22:10, 29 October 2026 (+07)
