Discussion

Status and the dispute

  • The page names Pakistan as the administering country and says once, with Britannica's article "Kashmir" (version of 15 October 2026), that the Kashmir region has been disputed between India and Pakistan since 1947. It takes no position on the dispute. The same wording is used for every place in the Kashmir region: "administered by Pakistan as …" or "a union territory administered by India".
  • The infobox names Pakistan as the country, so the territory shows on the Pakistan page and its maps.
  • Dawn (30 August 2009) reports the cabinet's approval of the Gilgit-Baltistan Empowerment and Self Governance Order 2009, which renamed the Northern Areas. The article does not describe the territory's present constitutional arrangements under the later orders that replaced it.

Figures

  • Area, population and districts are from Gilgit-Baltistan at a Glance 2025 (Planning and Development Department, Government of Gilgit-Baltistan), p. 3, which takes the census figures from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics. The table lists ten districts for the 2023 census. Its density column (25 per km²) is worked from the 2026 projection, not the census, and is not used.
  • Land cover (p. 5) is from the Forests Department of Gilgit-Baltistan, as the booklet credits it.
  • The infobox point (35.80, 75.00) is a rough centre for the map, not a named place.

Sources on cannabis

  • Salim and colleagues (2019), Journal of Ethnobiology and Ethnomedicine 15:6. Table 2 (p. 16) lists Cannabis sativa L., local name Thoonch, seed used at Nagar and Hunza and the whole plant at Kargha, mode of use "Direct". The same table also gives Thoonch as one of the local names of Capparis spinosa, so the name is not specific to cannabis. The survey covered Gilgit, Hunza, Nagar, Ghizer, Skardu and Astore districts; cannabis is listed only for Hunza, Kargha and Nagar.
  • Johnson (1867), p. 15, from the page images of the scan. The Balti settlers at Yarkand are hearsay: Johnson was told of them at Ilchí and did not visit Yarkand.
  • Indian Hemp Drugs Commission, vol. V, Punjab witness no. 94, Jawala Bhagat, pp. 518–520, from the page images. His evidence is a translation. He dates his trade from "Sammat 1913" (1856–57; the OCR text of the scan misreads it as 1918). He says charas is "manufactured by the people of" Askardu among other places; he does not say that it was grown at Skardu, and the page does not say so either.
  • Indian Hemp Drugs Commission, vol. III, p. 56: an extract from the Punjab's external land trade report for 1891–92. It places Baltistan's imports within the "Ladakh" trade and says the Baltis at Simla did not come to trade; it ties no charas to them.
  • The seed listings of The Real Seed Company, the genebank entry G 33713 and the Vibes Collective strain guide: as cited on Hispar Valley, Hopar Valley and Karakoram.
  • Supreme Appellate Court of Gilgit-Baltistan, The State versus Haider (judgment of 6 January 2017). It is a heroin case; it is cited for who may investigate offences under the Control of Narcotic Substances Act, 1997 in Gilgit-Baltistan, not for any cannabis case.
