Evidentiary scope
The label gives the genus, a place, a collector, a number and a year. It gives no habitat, no use and no note on cultivation. The accession is classified Other. A single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from GBIF's cached copy of the museum's image (1600 × 2487 pixels).
- Society label: printed Herb. Soc. Hort. Lond. / handwritten Cannabis and a mark / printed Ad Sinum Delagoa Africæ Australis. / printed Forbes. handwritten No. and a number / printed 1822.
- Museum label: printed HERB. MUS. PARIS. / handwritten Cannabis / a handwritten word at the foot that the readings do not agree on.
The handwritten number is cursive and underlined: one reading gives 75, the other 47 (or 41, 49). The museum's catalogue gives 75, and the page follows it.
Georeferencing
The point -26.05, 32.78 is the middle of Maputo Bay, the Baía de Maputo of OpenStreetMap (relation 11268595), an area of about 1,067 km²; the middle falls inside the bay. The label's Ad Sinum Delagoa places the gathering at the bay, formerly Delagoa Bay (English Wikipedia, Maputo Bay), and nowhere more closely. The point is an area point for the bay, not the place the plant was gathered, which was on land beside it. Basis: district point. Uncertainty: about 19 km.
Editorial treatment
Collector. English Wikipedia has John Forbes (1798–1823), an English botanist; the label gives the surname only, and the page names him no further. The collector field is left empty for the same reason.
Number. The two readings of the handwritten number disagree (see the label reading above); the title takes the catalogue's 75.
Place. The locality field takes the label's Latin; no province is given, because the bay's shores lie in more than one of today's provinces.
