Page scope
Eastern Bengal and Assam District Gazetteers: Jalpaiguri (1911) covers John F. Gruning's district gazetteer of Jalpaiguri, printed at Allahabad in 1911 as a volume of the Eastern Bengal and Assam District Gazetteers. Hunter's account of the district of 1876, which the gazetteer quotes, is treated at A Statistical Account of Bengal, Volume X (1876).

The gazetteer used

The page uses the Digital Library of India scan linked from the infobox, as it stood on 4 October 2026. The excise paragraph (pp. 127–128), the title page, the preface, the contents and every other passage the page cites are taken from the page images.

The figures in the excise paragraph

The OCR misreads four of the readings used on the page:

  • the ganja receipts, which it gives as ".05,411" where the page image prints "Rs. 55,411";
  • the excise revenue of 1892–93, whose last digits it garbles, where the image prints "Rs. 1,44,534";
  • the excise revenue of 1902–03, given as "Rs. 2,49,186" where the image prints "Rs. 2,49,486";
  • the date of Sunder's settlement report in the preface, given as 1896 where the image prints 1895.

The printed figures agree with the paragraph's total. Of the Rs. 3,07,932 collected in 1907–08, country spirit gave Rs. 2,33,171, ganja Rs. 55,411, opium Rs. 13,093 and the pachwai licences Rs. 2,614, which leaves Rs. 3,643 for the other heads.

Where the gazetteer is inconsistent

The gazetteer dates the annexation of the Duars twice: "annexed in 1865 after the war with Bhutān" (p. 1) and "the annexation of the Duārs in November 1864" (p. 25). The article gives neither date.

Names that look like the drug but are not

Rājganja, grown west of the Tista (p. 58), is "a superior variety of jute". The OCR reads it as "Bajganja".

Title and category

The title page reads "Eastern Bengal and Assam District Gazetteers. Jalpaiguri." The page takes that title with the year added. The infobox sets the regional category to India.
