Why Eastern Antioquia is a growing area

  • The only source for the area is the Ministry of Defence's open dataset, Erradicación. It lists 71 entries of marijuana eradicated in the nine municipalities between 30 January 2008 and 5 September 2018, 53.7 hectares in all (downloaded 3 November 2026). Eradication of a crop is evidence that it was grown where it was eradicated.
  • The status is Active: the entries run to 2018. No source says growing in the area has ended.

The name

All nine municipalities are in the east of the department, the region known in Antioquia as the Oriente antioqueño, and the title is its English form. The area is not the whole of that region: municipalities with no marijuana entries, among them Rionegro, Marinilla, Guarne, El Retiro, La Ceja and Granada, are outside it.

Extent and border

  • The map border is the union of the nine municipalities as drawn in OpenStreetMap (relations 1307016 Abejorral, 1307237 Cocorná, 3947502 El Carmen de Viboral, 1307235 La Unión, 1307240 San Carlos, 1348660 San Francisco, 1350644 San Luis, 1307239 San Rafael, 1307009 Sonsón), simplified; about 4,650 km², the figure in the infobox. The nine form one continuous shape.
  • The dataset gives no vereda, so the border takes in the whole of each municipality.
  • The point in the infobox is the centre of the border, not a field.

Sources

  • Ministry of Defence, Erradicación (open dataset). Rows for Antioquia with crop type marihuana. By municipality: San Francisco 17.49 ha (21 rows, May 2009 to July 2018); Cocorná 9.97 (11, April 2009 to May 2016); Sonsón 8.10 (10, November 2013 to November 2016); San Luis 7.70 (9, March 2013 to January 2017); El Carmen de Viboral 3.83 (5, January 2009 to January 2018); San Carlos 2.91 (5, January 2008 to May 2018); San Rafael 2.12 (7, June 2008 to September 2018); La Unión 1.00 (1, February 2009); Abejorral 0.60 (2, June 2013 to August 2014). The largest single entries are 3.0 hectares (Cocorná, San Luis). The figures on the page are sums of the rows, rounded.

Not used

  • Four herbarium sheets from Rionegro, in the same region, lie outside the border. None records a crop: one comes from a project on medicinal plants (2004), and the others give only a farm or an air base. The dataset has no marijuana entries for Rionegro.
  • Marijuana eradicated elsewhere in Antioquia is outside the area: in the north (Valdivia, about 20 hectares, 2007–2016; Anorí, Yarumal, Campamento), the west (Urrao, Dabeiba) and the south-west (Caramanta, Támesis, Jardín, Betania, Betulia).
  • Reports that name Antioquia without a place are not used for the area: a "sea of marijuana" found in the department, in Cervantes Angulo's book of 1980 (pp. 326–327), and crops found in Antioquia in 1968 (Sáenz Rovner 2007, p. 220).
