Discussion

Evidentiary scope

This is an object rather than a field gathering: Kew's catalogue names a donor and a donor date, and no collector, no collection date and no place finer than North China. It documents hemp fibre from northern China that had reached Kew by February 1862. The object is prepared fibre, so it documents a processing step as well as a plant. The catalogue gives no habitat and no note on cultivation, so the accession is classified Other; no conservation priority is assigned.

Kew publishes no image of this object, and GBIF carries none.

Georeferencing

No point is given. The geography line reads North China, a broad region that spans several provinces and has no boundary, and names no place within it; the region is far larger than a province.

Editorial treatment

The donor date is not a collection date. February 1862 is when the fibre was given to Kew. It is used only as the latest date the gathering can be from, which the title gives; the collection date stays empty.

Donor, not collector. Bickford TL is in Kew's donor field, which its help page uses for specimens that passed through a second person or institution, so the collector field is empty. The donor is not further identified.

Collection method. The field gives Herbarium specimen, the value for a preserved specimen, as on the other Kew fibre accessions; GBIF publishes the object as a preserved specimen. It is a fibre sample, not a pressed sheet.

A pair. The seed sample EBC 43408 (by 1862) has the same donor and donor date, with its place given as Northern China. Neither entry says whether the two came from the same crop.
