Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The labels place a cannabis plant at Tientsin in 1912. They give no habitat, use or note on cultivation. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned. The Harvard slip shows that the Meise sheet has been sampled for DNA; no published result has been connected to it here.
Label reading
Read from Meise's original image (5755 × 8025 pixels) and Edinburgh's IIIF image (4096 pixels high); the stamp and the a were read twice, independently.
- Meise, printed label. PLANTS OF CHINA / Cannabis sativa L. / Tientsin / Chihli Province / No. 1765 Mary Strong Clemens 1912. Stamped number 118281.
- Meise, stamp on a newspaper scrap partly under the label: Leichwang, / Chihli Prov. China.
- Meise, Harvard slip. Population dynamics destructive / Leaf tissue removed for DNA / Christopher J. Grassa (ECON) - 2018/07/02 / HARVARD UNIVERSITY HERBARIA.
- Edinburgh. The same printed label with No. 1765 and a handwritten a (read once as a, with d allowed). Stamp Aug. 23, 1912 / Leichwang, / Chihli Prov. China.
Georeferencing
The coordinate, 39.15, 117.21, is Wikidata's point for Tianjin (Q11736, which carries the alias Tientsin), 39.146667, 117.205556, rounded to two decimals. It stands for the city the label names, not for a collection site in it; the label gives no altitude to check, and SRTM gives 3 m there. Leichwang was not found in Wikidata or Nominatim and is not used.
The label's Chihli Province is Zhili, the province Tianjin belonged to. The province field takes Tianjin, the present municipality.
Editorial treatment
Two sheets, one accession. The sheets share the label, the number and the stamp. Edinburgh's 1765a is taken as a sheet suffix, not a different gathering. The Meise sheet is the infobox image.
Date. The infobox stores the year, 1912, which both labels print. The Edinburgh stamp's 23 August 1912 may be the date the sheet was stamped, not gathered, and Meise's 21 June 1912 appears on neither label.
Collector. The label prints the full name, Mary Strong Clemens, which the collector field keeps and the prose links. No source read places her at Tientsin in 1912; the label is the evidence.
Source discrepancies
- Meise's catalogue dates the sheet 21 June 1912; neither label shows that date, and the Edinburgh stamp reads 23 August 1912.
- Edinburgh's number carries a handwritten a; Meise's does not.
- Edinburgh's catalogue gives no collector, place or country (filed Inner China, Korea and Taiwan).
