Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The label reads Fl. yellowish green. Moist grassland. and places the plant at Chian Shing Cheon, south of Sining, at 3,200 to 3,300 metres, in August 1923. It gives no use, variety or note on cultivation. The plant grew in a natural habitat, with no word of cultivation. The accession is classified Feral, by inference from the label; the label does not say whether the plants descended from a crop. A single gathering does not establish a continuing population, and no conservation priority is assigned. An earlier version of this note classified the sheet as Other because the label gives no note on cultivation.
Label reading
Read from Edinburgh's IIIF image (4096 pixels high).
- Label (printed, completed by hand): PLANTS OF KANSU PROVINCE, CHINA / NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC SOCIETY CENTRAL CHINA EXPEDITION, UNDER THE DIRECTION OF F. R. WULSIN / Cannabis sativa Linn. / Fl. yellowish green. Moist grassland. / Chian Shing Cheon, south of Sining; altitude 3200 to 3300 meters / No. 681 R. C. CHING, Collector August 2, 1923.
- Slip. SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION / From THE UNITED STATES NATIONAL HERBARIUM.
Georeferencing
No coordinate is asserted. Chian Shing Cheon was not found. Sining is Xining (Wikidata Q69060), where SRTM gives 2,253 m, about 1,000 m below the label's altitude, so the city's point cannot stand for the site. The province field takes Qinghai, the province of which Xining is the capital; the label's province is Kansu.
Editorial treatment
Elevation. The elevation field takes 3,250 m, the midpoint of the label's 3,200 to 3,300 m; the article quotes the range.
Collector. The collector field keeps the label's R. C. Ching. The Harvard botanist index gives him as Ren-Chang Ching (秦仁昌, 1898–1986), botanist of the National Geographic Society's expedition in central China under Frederick R. Wulsin, which collected in Kansu, Chinghai and Ninghsia in 1923. The prose links that form; Wulsin is named in plain text.
Source discrepancies
- Edinburgh's catalogue gives no collector, place, date or country for the sheet (filed Inner China, Korea and Taiwan). Everything on this page beyond the plant's name comes from the label.
