Discussion
Evidentiary scope
The New York label reads Along cultivated fields and the Edinburgh label Along slope and around cultivated fields.; both place the plant near Cheeloo University, Tsinan-fu. The Beijing and Nanjing labels read Cultivated and Tsinan. All four date the gathering 14 September 1930. The labels differ on whether the plants were cultivated, and none gives a use. The accession is classified Other. No conservation priority is assigned. Earlier versions of this note classified the sheet as Other, and then as Feral from the New York and Edinburgh labels, before the Beijing and Nanjing labels were read.
Label reading
Read from the garden's image as relayed by GBIF's image cache (2000 × 3000 pixels) and Edinburgh's IIIF image (4096 pixels high). The California Academy's sheet did not load from either route on 8 October 2026 and is cited from its catalogue.
- New York. PLANTS OF SHANTUNG PROVINCE, CHINA / HERBARIUM OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NANKING / Cannabis sativa Linn. / Along cultivated fields Cheloo University / TSINANFU / cooperation line / By C. Y. CHIAO No. 3165 IX/14/ 1930. Determination slip: E. Small, Aug. 1975, Cannabis sativa L. subsp. sativa var. sativa.
- Edinburgh. Same printed label: Herb, alt. 100 m. / Along slope and around / cultivated fields. / Near Cheloo University, Tsinan-fu. / No. a typed letter struck through (read as X, A or Z) 3165 Sept. 14, 1930.
- Beijing and Nanjing, read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's images (PE 00557942, 994 × 1,440 pixels; NAS00290036, 989 × 1,440 pixels). The same shorter label on both: PLANTS OF SHANTANG PROVINCE, CHINA / Herbarium of the University of Nanking / Cannabis sativa Linn. / Cultivated / Tsinan / Coll. by (blank) / No. 3165 / IX/14/1930. The Beijing sheet adds 濟南 by hand after Tsinan; its tag reads 3165 / Sept 15, 30; it carries the stamp of the National Academy of Peiping and a slip From Herbarium of the University of Nanking. The Nanjing sheet carries the herbarium number 58476, the stamp of the Biological Laboratory, Science Society of China, and a tag 3165 / 9/14/30. The readings differ only on the Nanjing place, read once as Tainan; the page reads Tsinan on both sheets.
Georeferencing
The coordinate, 36.65, 117.01, is the site of Cheeloo University: Chinese Wikipedia (齐鲁大学) states that the old campus is today's Baotuquan campus of Shandong University in Jinan. OpenStreetMap's campus centroid (36.6516, 117.0122) and Wikidata's point for the university (Q5089300; 36.653056, 117.011944) agree within 200 m and round to the same value. SRTM gives 46–50 m there against the label's 100 m, a coarse label figure. The point stands for the campus; the label says only near it. The province field takes Shandong. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 2 km.
Editorial treatment
Five sheets, one accession. The five sheets share the number, the date and the city. The New York sheet is the infobox image; the Edinburgh sheet is shown in the gallery. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so its sheets are cited here and not shown.
Classification. Two labels place the plant along or around cultivated fields, and two read Cultivated. The page does not choose between them, and the accession is classified Other.
Locality. The labels spell the university Cheloo; the locality field and the prose use the usual English form, Cheeloo (齐鲁, Qilu).
Collector as on Talk:Chiao 2698 (1930).
Source discrepancies
- The New York catalogue spells the place Chello Univ.; the label reads Cheloo University.
- Edinburgh's catalogue gives no collector, place or country for its sheet (filed Inner China, Korea and Taiwan).
- The Beijing and Nanjing labels read Cultivated; the New York label reads Along cultivated fields and the Edinburgh label Along slope and around cultivated fields.
- The tag on the Beijing sheet reads Sept 15, 30; every label reads 14 September.
- The Beijing and Nanjing labels print the province Shantang.
