Evidentiary scope
The label records the plant as an escaped herb on a rocky slope at 600 m on Lao Shan, so the accession is classified Feral, on the collector's word. It does not say what the plant escaped from, whether hemp was grown nearby, or how many plants grew there. A single gathering does not establish a feral population. No conservation priority is assigned.
Label reading
Read from Edinburgh's IIIF image (4096 pixels high). The New York sheet could not be read: its image did not load through GBIF's image cache, and the garden's server reset the connection, on four attempts between 15:30 and 20:25 on 8 October 2026.
- Edinburgh label (printed, completed by hand): PLANTS OF SHANTUNG PROVINCE, CHINA / HERBARIUM OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NANKING / Cannabis sativa Linn. / Escaped herb. Alt. 600 m. / Along rocky slope. / Flower yellowish. / Niu Shu Tai. Lao Shan. / COLLECTED IN COOPERATION WITH THE ARNOLD ARBORETUM, HARVARD UNIVERSITY, FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF NANKING / By C. Y. CHIAO / No. 2698 July 2, 1930.
- Beijing sheet (PE 00557945), read twice, independently, from the Chinese Virtual Herbarium's image (PE 00557945, 1,021 × 1,440 pixels). The same printed label: PLANTS OF SHANTUNG PROVINCE, CHINA / Cannabis sativa Linn. / Escaped herb. Alt. 600 m. / Along rocky slope. / Flowers yellowish. / Niu Shu Tai. Lao Shan. / the cooperation line / C. Y. Chiao / No. 2698 July 2, 1930. Tag 2698 with a faint date; SHANTUNG province stamp; Fan Memorial Institute stamp; stamped number 41273. The two readings agree.
Georeferencing
The point 36.20, 120.58 is the village of Liushutai (柳树台) on Lao Shan (崂山, Wikidata Q1698782), the massif east of Qingdao: OpenStreetMap node 5503085059. Niu Shu Tai was not found as written in Nominatim within a box over Lao Shan, and is read as Liushutai by sound only, with n for l; no source read gives the label's spelling. The characters 柳樹台 are written on a University of Tsingtao sheet gathered two years later, Sha 436 (1932). SRTM gives 382 m at the village against the label's 600 m, so the rocky slope lies some 200 m above it. The point stands for the village and the slopes around it, not the place on them where the plant was gathered. The province field takes Shandong. An earlier version of this note gave no point, because the massif gives no collection point and Niu Shu Tai had not been found. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 4 km.
Editorial treatment
Three sheets, one accession. The New York, Edinburgh and Beijing sheets share the number, date and place. The repository, catalogue number and occurrence are New York's, the catalogued sheet; the image is Edinburgh's, the sheet that could be read. The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its images under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, so its sheets are cited here and not shown.
Classification. Feral follows from the label's Escaped herb.
Collector. The collector field keeps the label's C. Y. Chiao. The Harvard botanist index gives him as Chiao Ch'i-yüan (焦啓源, 1901–1968), collecting in Shandong in 1930, and the prose links that form.
Source discrepancies
- Edinburgh's catalogue gives no collector, place or country for its sheet (filed Inner China, Korea and Taiwan).
- The New York catalogue leaves out the label's Escaped herb and altitude (from the Edinburgh duplicate; the New York label was not seen).
