Evidentiary scope

The catalogue records the plant as cultivé dans le village (cultivated in the village) at M'Poya, in 1902: a village crop at a named place. Drug-type cannabis from different regions began to be cross-bred, and its seed carried into old growing areas, in the 1970s (McPartland and Small 2020, pp. 84–85), so a hybrid origin is not considered for a sheet gathered in 1902. The accession is classified Landrace, by inference from the catalogue's transcription of the label. It gives no use and no local name. The sheet does not show what became of the crop or whether its seed survives, and no conservation priority is assigned.

Georeferencing

The point -2.61, 16.21 is the town of Mpouya, OpenStreetMap node 614006082, near the Congo River in the Plateaux Department; OpenStreetMap's district tagging gives Djambala. The catalogue names M'Poya on the Congo, in the region of the Léfini, par 3° lat. S.; the town lies at 2.61° south, which the label's round figure covers. It places the gathering at the town, not at the village within it where the plant grew. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 5 km.

Editorial treatment

Collector. Auguste Jean Baptiste Chevalier (1873–1956), a French botanist who explored French Central Africa on a mission to the Chari and Lake Chad in 1902–1904 (English Wikipedia, Auguste Chevalier), fits the catalogue's Chevalier, A.J.B.; the collector field takes his first initial.

Place. The page names the catalogue's M'Poya by its present spelling, Mpouya, a locality near the Congo River (English Wikipedia, Mpouya).

Image. No image of the sheet was read for this page; its values are the holder's catalogue's. The museum's image of the sheet is published under CC BY 4.0 but could not be retrieved for this page (GBIF's image cache does not hold it, and the museum's own server refused the connection); the label has not been read.

The sheet's label: the catalogue's text may abridge it, and it may give a local name.
