Page scope
Carlton E. Turner is a biography of the chemist Carlton E. Turner (born 1940), written for his work on the University of Mississippi's marijuana project and his later role as White House adviser on drug abuse policy. It keeps to his published professional record. Pages that mention him use the form Carlton Turner; that title redirects here.
Data verification
His posts follow the White House releases of 1983, 1985 and 1986 and the Reagan Library's finding aid for his files; his years at the University of Mississippi follow the university's programme history and its 2007 news release. The account of the garden follows Anthony Haden-Guest in High Times, November 1976. Discuss conflicts and corrections here.

Discussion

Name

Every source read gives the middle initial only: the White House releases, the Library of Congress name authority record (from the title page of The marijuana controversy, 1981), the Reagan Library finding aid and his papers. The title keeps the initial. Small and Cronquist (1976) spell his first name Carleton.

Date of birth

The White House releases of 1983 and 1985 and the Reagan Library's finding aid differ by one day on his date of birth. The article gives the year.

Doctorate

Haden-Guest (1976) says he took his PhD at the University of Southern Mississippi in 1969. The Encyclopedia of Drug Policy says he studied there from 1964 to 1970. The year of the degree and the title of his dissertation have not been confirmed.

Director of the project and of the institute

Haden-Guest (1976) says Turner was made director of the marijuana project in 1971; the university's programme history gives no year for his directorship, only his arrival (1970) and departure (1981). The finding aid says he became director of the Research Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences in 1980; the university's release of 2007 gives 1980–84, which overlaps his White House years; the White House releases call him the institute's director before he joined the administration. The Encyclopedia of Drug Policy calls him assistant director of the marijuana facility.

Policy record

The paragraph on his policy follows the Encyclopedia of Drug Policy and is attributed to it. The entry also attributes to him a statement about marijuana users and the paraquat spraying, and statements on the cultural effects of marijuana; those are not repeated in the article without a primary source.

Pages of the encyclopedia entry

The publisher's metadata gives page 785; the online text marks a page break before page 785 within the entry, so the article cites pp. 784–785.

Speaker of the remarks on species

In Haden-Guest's article the remarks on the number of species (p. 108) continue the tour Turner gave on pp. 62–63, and the next paragraph names Turner as the speaker.

Portrait

No freely licensed portrait has been chosen. Photographs taken by the White House in 1981–1986 may be federal works; none has been identified.
