Evidentiary scope
The sheet is the earliest South African cannabis specimen this sweep found, and one of very few anywhere that records a vernacular name at the point of collection. Henry Callaway was an Anglican missionary in Natal who wrote on Zulu religion and language; the sheet reached Kew through him rather than from him in the field, and who gathered it is not recorded. The catalogue gives a collector, a number, a date and a locality. It is a single gathering and shows neither a continuing population nor a living germplasm holding, so it supports neither a landrace nor a feral classification. The accession is classified Other. No conservation priority is assigned.
Georeferencing
No coordinate is given and none is asserted. Natal is a colony, not a locality: the accession is placed no more finely than that.
Editorial treatment
The date is a receipt date and the accession carries the year alone. Kew's catalogue renders it as 1857-01-01 with day precision and flags its own rendering as padded. Writing a month or a day for this sheet would be inventing precision the source does not carry.
The province field is left empty: Natal as it stood in 1857 does not correspond to a present-day province, and the catalogue gives none.
