Evidentiary scope

The label places the plant in Gärten (in gardens) at Kasr Dachl, in the Dakhla Oasis, in 1874: a crop of the oasis gardens. Drug-type cannabis from different regions began to be cross-bred, and its seed carried into old growing areas, in the 1970s (McPartland and Small 2020, pp. 84–85), so a hybrid origin is not considered for a sheet gathered in 1874. The accession is classified Landrace, by inference from the label. It gives no use and no local name. The sheet does not show what became of the crop or whether its seed survives, and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from GBIF's cached copy of the museum's image (1600 × 2446 pixels); the page states only what the two readings agree.

  • Expedition label: stamp G. Rohlfs Expedition in die libysche Wüste / handwritten 2230 / Cannabis sativa L. / Kasr Dachl, in Gärten S.W. / printed bestimmt von P. Ascherson handwritten 17. I. and the year.
  • Museum label: printed HERB. MUS. PARIS. / handwritten Cannabis sativa L. / printed Collection ASCHERSON. / Reçu de l'HERBIER DE BERLIN le 20 Avril 1914.

The year is not agreed: its last digit is written over another. One reading gives 1874; the other reads the printed part as 189 and the digit as 7, 4 or 9. The cached image (1,600 pixels wide) does not settle it.

Georeferencing

The point 25.70, 28.88 is the village of Al-Qasr, OpenStreetMap node 11690527492 (القصر الإسلامية), in the Dakhla Oasis, New Valley Governorate. The label's Kasr Dachl is taken as Al-Qasr of Dakhla; it names gardens there and no spot within them. The label gives no altitude; the SRTM height at the node is 116 metres. It places the gathering at the village, not at a garden within it. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 3 km.

Editorial treatment

Date. The stamp names Rohlfs's expedition into the Libyan Desert. Paul Ascherson accompanied Friedrich Gerhard Rohlfs on that expedition in 1873–74 (English Wikipedia, Paul Friedrich August Ascherson), and the expedition left the Dakhla Oasis for Kufra early in 1874, reaching the dunes north of Abu Ballas by February (English Wikipedia, Friedrich Gerhard Rohlfs). The label's 17 January at Kasr Dachl therefore falls in January 1874, and the field stores 1874. The catalogue's 17 January 1877 is reported beside it in the article; the overwritten digit on the label has not been read with certainty, and a full-resolution image may settle it.

Collector. The label names Ascherson as the determiner, and the catalogue gives him as the collector. The collector field takes the catalogue's Ascherson, P.

Place. The page names Kasr Dachl by its present form, Al-Qasr.

Source discrepancies

  • The catalogue dates the sheet 17 January 1877; the label's year is overwritten, and the expedition named on its stamp was in the desert in 1873–74.
  • The catalogue transcribes the place as Kasr Daihl, in Särten S.W; both readings of the label give Kasr Dachl, in Gärten S.W.

Sources not yet read

The museum's full-resolution image of the sheet: it may settle the year's last digit.
