Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The catalogue places a cannabis plant at Nishihama, Katase, in Fujisawa, on 20 August 1958, and names Yasuhiro Asai as the collector. The label itself has not been seen. The catalogue gives no habitat and no note on cultivation, so the accession is classified Other; no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Not read: the holder publishes no image of the sheet. The page reports the catalogue's fields as GBIF publishes them (read 12 October 2026): catalogue number 257849; collector Yasuhiro Asai; number 8509; date 1958-08-20; province Kanagawa (神奈川縣); county Fujisawa City; locality Nishihama, Katase; name Cannabis sativa L.; no coordinates or altitude.

Georeferencing

The point 35.31, 139.47 is the beach of Katase Nishihama as OpenStreetMap maps it (way 439468100, 片瀬西浜・鵠沼海水浴場, natural=beach, centre 35.3117, 139.4746), rounded to two decimal places. The catalogue's Nishihama, Katase is read as this beach; a bus stop named 西浜 (node 3939185328, in Katasekaigan, Fujisawa) stands 0.8 km from the point, and the Katase neighbourhood node (8837263799) 2.7 km to the north-east. The catalogue names the place and no spot in it. The beach's outline reaches 1.0 km from the point, and 1 km is added because Nishihama may also name the ground behind the beach. A reverse lookup of the point gives Fujisawa, Kanagawa Prefecture. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 2 km.

Editorial treatment

Catalogue only. The accession is made from the holder's catalogue alone, with no image; every fact on the page is the catalogue's, and the label may hold more than the catalogue transcribes.

Collector. The collector field takes the catalogue's Yasuhiro Asai. A Yasuhiro Asai (1933-2022), a Japanese dental scientist and botanist who worked on naturalised plants, is in the Harvard Index of Botanists, Wikidata and the Japanese Wikipedia; no source read connects him to this sheet, and the name is not linked.

Place. The province and municipality fields take Kanagawa Prefecture and the city of Fujisawa; the locality field keeps the catalogue's Nishihama, Katase.

Date. The sheet was gathered in 1958. The date does not bear on the class: the catalogue gives no habitat and no note on cultivation.

Source discrepancies

  • None. The page gives the catalogue's collector, number, date and place, as GBIF publishes them.
