Discussion
Evidentiary scope
One catalogue, that of the herbarium of the University of Colorado Museum of Natural History, gives the place as Imaichi, cult. prov. Shimotsuke (Imaichi, cultivated, Shimotsuke province). The Makino Herbarium labels place a cannabis plant at Imaichi in September 1901 and are silent on cultivation. They give no habitat and no use, and name no collector. Drug-type cannabis from different regions began to be cross-bred, and its seed carried into old growing areas, in the 1970s (McPartland and Small 2020, pp. 84–85), so a hybrid origin is not considered for a sheet gathered in 1901. The accession is classified Landrace, by inference from the catalogue. The sheet does not show what became of the crop or whether its seed survives, and no conservation priority is assigned. An earlier version of this note classified the sheet as Other because a single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population.
Label reading
Read twice, independently, from the holder's image (1082 × 1920 pixels). The Leiden sheet; the Edinburgh duplicate was read twice from GBIF's cached copy of the garden's image (814 × 1200 pixels), and the Taipei duplicate once from its holder's image (1,472 × 2,048 pixels), for comparison only.
- Header (Leiden; printed and stamped). RIJKSHERBARIUM, LEIDEN / (Herb. Lugd. Bat.) / GESUBLIMATISEERD (treated with sublimate) / № 530336.
- Label (Leiden; printed, typed entries). 120388 / Makino Herbarium / From the collection of Dr. Tomitarô Makino / (1862—1957), one of the pioneer botanists of Japan. / Cannabis sativa L. / Imaichi City, Tochigi Pref. / Date: Sept., 1901 / Coll.: (blank) / Det. K. Hiyama(1960). On this copy the K and the H carry small inked marks, not interpreted.
- Edinburgh (E01459321). The same, typed Det.:K.Hiyama(1960), Coll.: blank. A faint pencilled number above the label, read 153 and 1553, is not used.
- Taipei (HAST 75458). The same, typed Imaichi, Imaichi City, Tochigi Pref. and Date:Sept., 1901, Coll.: blank; the image carries no licence and is not reproduced.
- The Leiden sheet carries the barcodes L.1592648 and, from an earlier numbering, L 0815792; the stamped 100640 is a registration number of the herbarium.
Georeferencing
The point 36.72, 139.69 is Imaichi as OpenStreetMap maps it today, a quarter of Nikkō (node 7968833505, place=quarter); a second node of the same name, 0.9 km to the east (node 8793948658), lies within the uncertainty. The Taipei label names Imaichi first, and in 1901 Imaichi was a town; the later city of Imaichi (1954-2006) covered much more ground and is not the place meant. The Munich BioSample gives a point, 36.7235, 139.695, which it credits to a georeferencing of 2022, not to the label; it lies 0.6 km from this point. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 3 km.
Editorial treatment
One gathering. The Leiden, Edinburgh, Taipei and COLO sheets and the Munich voucher share the Makino Herbarium number, the place and the month, so they are one gathering and one accession. The page shows the Leiden sheet, whose image is free to reuse; the Taipei image carries no licence and the COLO image a non-commercial one.
Collector. All three labels read leave Coll.: blank. From the collection of Dr. Tomitarô Makino says where the sheets came from, not who gathered the plant, so the collector field is empty and the title takes the Anon. form. The catalogues and the BioSample name Makino; that is their attribution.
Title. 120388 is a number of the Makino Herbarium, not a collector's number, so the title takes the s.n. form, as for Makino s.n., Jinzhou (1941). The place is Imaichi, the label's.
Determiner. K. Hiyama is probably Kozo Hiyama (born 1905), the only K. Hiyama in the Harvard index of botanists; the field keeps the label's form.
Place. The province and municipality fields take Tochigi Prefecture and Nikkō, the present-day city that includes Imaichi; the locality field gives Imaichi.
Munich. The fifth sheet is known only from the BioSample, whose voucher M:288741 names the herbarium by its code M, that of the Munich state botanical collection. It is not found in GBIF or in the JACQ catalogue, and its label has not been seen; the BioSample is the source for everything said of it.
Source discrepancies
- The catalogues of the Leiden, Taipei and COLO sheets and the Munich BioSample name Makino as the collector; the labels leave the line blank.
- The Taipei catalogue gives the day as 1 September 1901; the labels give the month only.
- The COLO catalogue adds cult. and prov. Shimotsuke; neither is on the labels read.
- The Leiden catalogue gives the collector's number as Makino, T 120388; on the labels 120388 is the Makino Herbarium's number.
Sources not yet read
- The labels of the COLO and Munich sheets.
