Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The label places a cannabis plant in a hollow between sand ridges in the Moyynkum desert in June 1934. It gives no use and no note on cultivation, and names no collector. A single gathering does not establish a landrace or a continuing population. The accession is classified Other and no conservation priority is assigned.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from the holder's image (3546 × 5143 pixels). The page states only what the readings agree, except where noted.

  • Stamp (violet, across the top of the label). Herbarium Universitatis Mosquensis (MW).
  • Pencil. N 140 / Cannabis sativa L. / a short struck mark, then ruderalis? / Муюн-Кумы. Акыр-Тюбе / В широкой ложбине между / песчаными грядами. / 14/VI-34 г.
  • Readings that differ. The year's last figure was read 4 and 4 (the second time with 1 as an alternative); a third look on an enlarged crop finds a 3 and an open-topped 4: 1934. The first reading took a small sign after грядами as a full stop; the second read it as a stroke and a sign like ♂, uncertain; it is not used. The second reading's сложбине is taken as ложбине (hollow), the first reading's word.
  • No pencilled 1973 was seen on this sheet.

Georeferencing

The point 42.99, 72.10 is the village of Akyrtobe (Ақыртөбе), OpenStreetMap node 297596392, in Turar Ryskulov District, Jambyl Region; its railway station is node 3788871522. The label's Акыр-Тюбе is the Russian form of the same name, and Akyrtobe is the only place so named in OpenStreetMap between 41.5 and 47° N and 68 and 76° E. The village lies on the southern edge of the Moyynkum sands, 0.8 km outside the desert's mapped outline (way 611854275), with sands 1 km to the north, which fits the label's hollow between sand ridges. An unmapped well or mound of the same name deeper in the sands is possible. SRTM gives 630 m; the label gives no altitude. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 5 km.

Editorial treatment

Date. The label writes the year with two figures, 34. The catalogue gives no date; the page reads it as 1934: the label is in the Russian spelling used since 1918, so the two figures are read in that century.

Collector. The label names nobody and the catalogue gives no collector; the collector field is empty and the title says Anon.

Number. N 140 is written above the name without saying whose series it belongs to; it is reported, not used as a collector number.

Taxon. The infobox takes the label's Cannabis sativa L.; its query ruderalis? is reported in the article.

Place. The title and the locality take today's form, Akyrtobe; the label's Акыр-Тюбе is given in the article.

Source discrepancies

  • The catalogue records no date, collector or locality; the label gives a date and a place.

These notes were recorded during accession preparation. Source citations remain in the article. Éloise 18:53, 12 October 2026 (+07)
