Discussion

Evidentiary scope

The label places the plant на коноплянниках (on hemp patches, ground sown with hemp) near the hamlet of Kokuy in July 1911. It gives no use. Drug-type cannabis from different regions began to be cross-bred, and its seed carried into old growing areas, in the 1970s (McPartland and Small 2020, pp. 84–85), so a hybrid origin is not considered for a sheet gathered in 1911. The accession is classified Landrace, by inference from the label. The sheet does not show what became of the crop or whether its seed survives, and no conservation priority is assigned. An earlier version of this note classified the sheet as Other because nothing is known of the seed, its source or what became of the crop.

Label reading

Read twice, independently, from the holder's image (6704 × 9785 pixels). The label is turned on its side on the sheet. The page states only what the readings agree.

  • Printed. Гербарій музея Восточно-Сибирскаго Отдѣла ИМПЕРАТОРСКАГО Русскаго Географическаго Общества въ Иркутскѣ. / Иркутская губ., Верхоленскій у., с. Бирюлька. / 1911. V / П. Александровъ.
  • By hand. 804 / Cannabis sativa L. / Ок. дер. Кокуя, на коноплянни- / ках / II,29.
  • Stamps and marks. Blue 14837 at the top of the sheet; a violet 103 in the lower left corner; neither is used.
  • Readings that differ. The first word of the hand line was read Ок. (near) and Окр. (environs), and its last word коноплянниках (plural) and коноплянникѣ (singular). Both readings put the plant near the hamlet of Kokuy on ground sown with hemp, which is all the page says.
  • The number 804 stands before the name without a label of its own; it may be the collector's or the museum's, and is not used as a collector number.
  • A pencilled 1973 in the lower right corner, in the hand seen on nearly every sheet of this series in the Moscow depository, says nothing about its purpose and is not used.

Georeferencing

The point 53.87, 106.33 is the village of Biryulka on the Lena, OpenStreetMap node 700732990, in Kachugsky district, Irkutsk Oblast: the place printed on the label. The line by hand puts the gathering near the hamlet of Кокуй (Kokuy). No settlement of that spelling is in OpenStreetMap in the area of the old Verkholensk uezd; the hamlet of Kukuy (Кукуй, node 1477725024) lies 1.1 km from Biryulka, and the Russian Wikipedia names Biryulka and Kukuy together as settlements of one farm in 1961. Kukuy is very probably the label's Kokuy, written with one vowel changed, but no source gives the 1911 spelling. Either way the gathering lies within a few kilometres of the point. SRTM gives 547 m; the label gives no altitude. Basis: settlement point. Uncertainty: about 3 km.

Editorial treatment

Classification. The label puts the plant on hemp patches, so hemp was grown there. The accession is still classified Other: one gathering from a sown patch says nothing of the seed or of a continuing crop.

Place. The printed place, the village of Biryulka, is that of the label's printed run; the line by hand puts the gathering near Kokuy, which the locality and the title take.

Collector. The collector field takes the catalogue's P. Alexandrov, the label's П. Александров. No source read for this page gives his full name, which is not linked.

Source discrepancies

  • The catalogue gives no locality; the label names Biryulka (printed) and Kokuy (by hand).
