Quindío is a cannabis growing area in the department of Quindío, on the western side of the Central Cordillera in Colombia. Two Punto Rojo selections, ZOM-COL-QUIN-0120240001 and ZOM-COL-QUIN-0120240002, were collected as seed in January 2024 from a landrace population grown near Calarcá, which forms the Calarcá appellation. Cannabis is also grown in the department under licence for medicinal use: in 2019 a licensed crop of about 300 plants grew near the town of Córdoba.[1]
The Calarcá population
Both accessions are landrace general populations of Punto Rojo from the 2023 harvest: a short-day crop grown for recreation and made into ganja. Éloïse collected both as seed on 15 January 2024, on the COLO01 expedition. One of them, 'Incense', has an incense-like aroma. Its collection notes add that cultivation is legal in the area and that most of the cannabis grown legally in Colombia is of foreign or hybrid genetics.
Licensed growing
In March 2019 the company Plantmedco, licensed to grow medicinal cannabis, had about 300 plants on a farm in the vereda (rural district) of Corozal, ten minutes from the town of Córdoba. The company's president said it hoped to have seven hectares planted that year and that it would establish itself only in Quindío.[1] In December 2023 an official of the departmental agriculture secretariat told Radio Nacional de Colombia that there were eight permits to produce cannabis in the department and an estimated 130 small producers.[2]
