The Medellín growing area is a cannabis growing area round the city of Medellín, in the department of Antioquia, in north-western Colombia. It is made up of four municipalities on the Central Cordillera: Medellín and Bello, in the Aburrá valley; San Jerónimo, to the west, on the slopes that fall to the Cauca; and Santa Bárbara, to the south. The area belongs to the Cordillera Central (Colombia) growing region.

Early reports

In 1961 the Colombian delegation to an inter-American consultative group on narcotics control, meeting in Rio de Janeiro, reported that marijuana was grown in Valle del Cauca, Caldas and Antioquia, drawing on a report of the country's secret police. In Antioquia the report named the municipalities of Bello, Santa Bárbara and San Jerónimo.[1]: 214–215 The historian Lina Britto writes that before the export boom of the 1970s marijuana in the Andean interior grew in scattered places, easily hidden among other cash crops, and that Medellín got its supply from nearby Bello.[2]: 73

Luis Felipe Cruz Olivera and Isabel Pereira Arana, of the research centre Dejusticia, write that around 1972 the country's production of marijuana, until then concentrated on the banks of the Cauca river in the coffee region and round Medellín, began to move to isolated parts of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.[3]: 51

Since 2000

One entry of the Ministry of Defence's open data records a hectare of marijuana eradicated in the municipality of Medellín in January 2016.[4]
