Kongpo (Kongbo; 工布, Gōngbù) is a cannabis growing area in Tibet, China, in the valleys of the Tsangpo and the Nyang, drawn on Bayi District, Mainling and Gongbo'gyamda County (工布江达) of Nyingchi. It is part of the Southeastern Tibet growing region. Frank Kingdon-Ward called Kongbo "a pastoral and agricultural country" in 1926.[1]: 50 Wild and feral cannabis from Kongpo was sampled for two genome studies published in 2026.[2][3] Police cleared wild plants there in 2021 and 2026.[4][5] A herbarium sheet was gathered at Shoga Dzong in 1947.[6]
Wild and feral plants
Cai Sen and colleagues assembled a chromosome-level genome, resolved into its two haplotypes, of a wild diploid accession they call CSLZ (C. sativa Linzhi). The plants sequenced were grown from cuttings of mother plants collected in Linzhi County at an average altitude of 3,100 m; the cuttings were rooted in a growth chamber.[2]
Wang Baishi and colleagues included a population from Nyingchi, which they call Linzhi (LZ), in a study of 271 accessions from 29 sites in China. Its ten plants, which the authors call feral, came from 2,949 m. The Institute of Forensic Science of the Ministry of Public Security collected the plants. In the authors' tree the Linzhi population falls in one group with the populations from Jilong (Gyirong Valley) and Yadong (Chumbi Valley).[3]
Herbarium sheet
Frank Ludlow, George Sherriff and H. H. Elliot collected the plant at Shoga Dzong at about 3,200 m (10,500 feet) on 15 September 1947. Their label, headed "Flora of South-East Tibet", reads "Green flower with dark green calyx. On dry open ground." (Ludlow 15714 (1947)).[6]
Clearances
In June 2021 the Lilong border police station of Nyingchi searched outlying houses and the fields of border villagers. At the edge of an idle field belonging to a resident it found about 170 wild plants of the cannabis family, which tests showed to be drug cannabis.[4] In September 2026 three schoolchildren of Baji village, in Bayi town of Bayi District, found wild cannabis in the village and reported it to the police station and the village work team, who brought villagers to clear it.[5]
