Help:Media and safety
More actions
This page covers guidelines for uploading photographs and other media to Landrace.Wiki, with particular attention to safety.
Cannabis cultivation is illegal in most countries where landrace varieties are grown. Photographs and media uploaded to this wiki must not put farmers, growers, or collaborators at risk. See also safety norms for the broader policy.
Before you upload
Check every image for the following before uploading:
Identifiable faces
Do not upload photographs showing identifiable faces of people engaged in illegal cultivation unless the person has given explicit, informed consent to be identified.
If a photograph is otherwise valuable but includes identifiable faces:
- Crop the image to exclude faces, or
- Blur faces using image editing software before uploading.
This applies to farmers, field workers, guides, and anyone else who could face legal consequences.
EXIF metadata
Digital photographs often contain embedded metadata (EXIF data) that can include precise GPS coordinates, camera serial numbers, timestamps, and device information. MediaWiki strips some EXIF data on upload, but this is not reliable for all fields and all file formats.
Always strip EXIF data yourself before uploading images from sensitive locations.
How to strip EXIF data:
- On desktop (any platform): Use ExifTool from the command line:
exiftool -all= photo.jpg
This removes all metadata from the file.
- On Windows: Right-click the file > Properties > Details tab > "Remove Properties and Personal Information."
- On macOS: Use the Preview app: open the image, File > Export, and save as a new file (this drops most metadata). For complete stripping, use ExifTool.
- On mobile: Most mobile operating systems now offer an option to strip location data when sharing. Check your camera settings. For certainty, use a metadata removal app before uploading.
Location sensitivity
Even without EXIF GPS data, a photograph can reveal a location through visible landmarks, signage, distinctive terrain, or other contextual clues. Consider whether the image, combined with other information on the page, could allow someone to identify a specific farm or field.
When in doubt, crop to show only the plant material and immediate surroundings.
File naming
Use descriptive filenames. Good examples:
Parvati-Valley-flowering-November-2024.jpgKoch-Bihar-field-general-population.jpgCambodia-Kampong-Cham-dried-flower.jpg
Avoid:
IMG_4392.jpgphoto1.jpg20241103_143022.jpg
Include the region, subject, and date or year where possible. This makes files findable and useful to other editors.
Uploading
Upload files through Special:Upload.
When uploading, fill in:
- Destination filename – Use the descriptive naming convention above.
- Summary – Describe what the image shows, where and when it was taken, and by whom (or "photographer unknown" if applicable).
- Licensing – Note the copyright status. Images taken by Zomia Collective field teams are typically uploaded under a Creative Commons licence. If you took the photograph yourself, state that.
Acceptable file types
MediaWiki accepts JPEG, PNG, GIF, SVG, and WebP for images. Use JPEG for photographs and PNG for diagrams, maps, or images with text.
Maximum file size depends on server configuration. If an upload fails, try reducing image dimensions or compression quality.
