Summary
"Treading ganja, Ahmednagar. 27th November 1893." Plate inserted between pp. 98 and 99 of the Report of the Indian Hemp Drugs Commission, 1893–94, vol. I (Simla: Government Central Printing Office, 1894), in chapter VI, "Preparation of the raw drugs from the cultivated and wild plant", with the imprint "Survey of India Offices, Calcutta, August 1894".
Two panels, one above the other, each showing a line of men treading the cut tops in the open, holding on to one another as they move. Ahmednagar was a district of the Bombay Presidency, whose witnesses were examined in vol. VII of the report. The plate records Bombay practice. The Bengal commercial grades, described by Hem Chunder Kerr in 1877, were not photographed for the commission's report: of its fourteen plates, none shows flat, round or chur ganja.
