Eastern Thailand is a cannabis growing region in Thailand, between the Gulf of Thailand and the border with Cambodia. It takes in the provinces of Chachoengsao, Chanthaburi, Chonburi, Prachinburi, Rayong, Sa Kaeo and Trat. Central Thailand lies to the west and Northeastern Thailand to the north.
Cannabis has been grown in the region under licence since 2019, when a hospital in Prachinburi was one of four bodies then licensed to grow it.[1] Police uprooted an unlicensed field of 1,200 plants in Sa Kaeo in 2020.[2]
Geography
The Sa Kaeo field lay near Pang Sida National Park, in Chong Kum subdistrict of Watthana Nakhon District.[2] In Rayong, a medical cannabis project began at the Kram subdistrict health-promoting hospital in Klaeng District in March 2021.[3] In 2019 the Government Pharmaceutical Organization planned the industrial phase of its cannabis production for Nong Yai District, Chonburi, to be finished by January 2021.[4]
Cultivation history
Licensed growing
Chao Phraya Abhaibhubejhr Hospital in Prachinburi was one of four bodies licensed to grow cannabis by June 2019, when it opened a cannabis clinic. It was then growing 16 plants in a shipping container to work out the cost of cultivation.[1] On 8 March 2021 the deputy public health minister planted Rayong's first legal cannabis plant at Kram, Klaeng, where a community enterprise was to grow it with the subdistrict hospital.[3]
Enforcement
In the months after medical cannabis was legalised in 2019, the Office of the Narcotics Control Board found people growing cannabis without permission in 11 provinces, Sa Kaeo among them.[5] In May 2020 police and officials raided a farm near Pang Sida National Park and uprooted 1,200 plants weighing about 525 kilograms, grown on six rai of land held without title. The grower, a 46-year-old man from Udon Thani, was charged.[2]
