Clemens 1765 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected at Tientsin (Tianjin), then in Chihli province, China, in 1912 by Mary Strong Clemens. Meise Botanic Garden holds a sheet as BR0000023200241[1] and the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh a second as E01459313.[2]
Collection and locality
Both sheets carry the printed label Plants of China, completed Tientsin, Chihli Province and No. 1765 Mary Strong Clemens 1912; on the Edinburgh sheet the number has a handwritten a.[3][4] Each sheet also bears a stamp reading Leichwang, Chihli Prov. China.: on the Meise sheet it is on a scrap of newspaper and partly covered by the label, while on the Edinburgh sheet it is dated Aug. 23, 1912.[3][4] Meise's catalogue gives the locality as Leichwang, Tientsin and the date as 21 June 1912, a date neither label shows.[1] Edinburgh's catalogue files its sheet with no collector or place.[2]
Specimen and identification
The Meise sheet carries a long stem with few leaves and a paper packet; the Edinburgh sheet long stems with leafy flowering branches.[3][4] The label names the plant Cannabis sativa L., the name both catalogues record.[1][2] A Harvard University Herbaria slip on the Meise sheet records that leaf tissue was removed for DNA by Christopher J. Grassa on 2 July 2018.[3]
