Chiao 3165 is a herbarium accession of Cannabis sativa collected near Cheeloo University, at Tsinan-fu (Jinan), Shandong, China, at 100 m on 14 September 1930 by C. Y. Chiao for the University of Nanking. The New York Botanical Garden holds a sheet as 01414426;[1] the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, the California Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing (PE 00557942)[2] and the Institute of Botany, Jiangsu Province and Chinese Academy of Sciences in Nanjing (NAS00290036)[3] hold duplicates. Its labels disagree on whether the plants were cultivated.
Collection and locality
The sheets carry the same printed label, Plants of Shantung Province, China and Herbarium of the University of Nanking, with the line Collected in cooperation with the Arnold Arboretum, Harvard University, for the University of Nanking. The New York label reads Along cultivated fields, Cheloo University, Tsinanfu and No. 3165, dated IX/14/1930.[4] The Edinburgh label is fuller: Herb, alt. 100 m. Along slope and around cultivated fields. Near Cheloo University, Tsinan-fu., No. 3165, Sept. 14, 1930.[5] The New York catalogue gives the locality as Chello Univ. Tsinanfu and the habitat as Along cultivated fields.[1] The California Academy's catalogue gives the Edinburgh wording and the altitude of 100 m.[6] The Beijing and Nanjing sheets carry a shorter label of the same printed series, headed Plants of Shantang Province, China. It reads Cultivated and Tsinan, with No. 3165 and IX/14/1930.; on the Beijing sheet 濟南 (Jinan) is added by hand.[7][8] The Chinese Virtual Herbarium publishes its sheet images under a non-commercial, no-derivatives licence (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0); they are read and cited here, not reproduced.
Specimen and identification
The New York sheet carries two long stems folded double, leafy below with dense fruiting branches; the Edinburgh sheet thick folded stems with leafy tops.[4][5] E. Small determined the New York sheet in August 1975 as Cannabis sativa L. subsp. sativa var. sativa.[4] Edinburgh's catalogue files its sheet with no collector or place.[9] Chiao's earlier gathering on Lao Shan, labelled an escaped plant, is Chiao 2698 (1930).
