Chitrali General Population 2021 is a landrace cannabis accession sourced by Angus of The Real Seed Company from Upper Chitral, Pakistan.[1]

Geography

The accession originates from Yarkhun Valley in Upper Chitral District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, in the high Hindu Kush.[1] Yarkhun Valley is the source of the Kunar River.[1]

The approximate latitude of the growing area is 35° N.[1]

History

Upper Chitral was historically one of the largest charas-producing regions of the Hindu Kush, including relative to Afghanistan. Commercial-scale cultivation ended with a government crackdown in the 1970s, and continued police pressure since has restricted large-scale growing. Cannabis cultivation in Upper Chitral is now largely confined to garden plots and small fields for personal use.[1]

Collection Details

Seeds were sourced directly by Angus from the 2021 harvest in Yarkhun Valley, Upper Chitral.[1]

Cultivation Details

Outdoor harvest in the region runs from October to early November.[1]

Botanical Characteristics

Chitrali populations exhibit a wide phenotypic range, from compact, broad-leafleted Indica-type plants to taller Sativa-type plants with broad or narrow leaflets. Plants reach one to three metres in height outdoors. Buds are typically dense and resinous, and pink stigmas are a common trait. A high proportion of plants express notable CBD.[1]

Aroma

Aromas range widely across the population, from hash and mandarin to tangy candy and gasoline.[1]

Effects

A warm, centred, luminous high.[1]

Conservation Status

Recorded at high conservation priority. RSC describes the Chitrali landrace in its pure form as precariously rare.[1]

Notes

Yarkhun Valley, the source of the Kunar River, has been proposed by some researchers as a possible origin point for Indica-type cannabis. RSC considers the valley more likely a point of intersection between Central and South Asian formal varieties of cannabis, referencing a published classification of endangered high-THC cannabis.[1]

RSC reports that two accessions from Chitral have shown strong mold resistance when grown in tropical conditions, including in a Hawaiian jungle climate.[1]
