Ban Nan Toeng 'Mama Somchai' General Population 2024 is a Lao-Isan landrace cannabis accession originating from Khok Phu in the Phu Phan Mountains, Sakhon Nakhon Province, Isan, Thailand. This domesticated population was collected at Point of Origin and represents the traditional Squirrel Tail (Hang Krarok) and Tiger Tail (Hang Suea) phenotypes. Seeds were gathered and preserved by Isabella through sourcing with Iza in 2025, supporting documentation and conservation of this historic landrace.

Geography

The accession is cultivated at approximately 150 meters elevation in the fertile soils of Khok Phu, located on the edge of the Kut Bak Plateau within the Phu Phan Mountains. The region features a warm, seasonally dry climate and isolated valleys that have historically protected the landrace from genetic contamination.

Collection Details

Ban Nan Toeng 'Mama Somchai' was collected in March 2025 by Isabella in collaboration with the farmer's mother, Somchai. Seeds were gathered from multiple plants on the farm qualifying it as a 'General Population'. The population is cultivated with traditional open-pollination methods. Conservation efforts focus on maintaining genetic diversity, countering the effects of male culling, and stabilizing seed stock for future propagation.

Botanical Characteristics

Plants reach 2–3 meters in height with narrow leaves and long internodal spacing. Two primary expressions are observed:

Tiger Tail (Hang Suea): Robust structure with thick colas, strong lateral branching, and dense trichomes. Aromas: earthy spice, herbal musk, woody undertones. Effects: clear-headed, energizing, ideal for daytime use.

Squirrel Tail (Hang Krarok): Delicate, elongated, foxtail-like colas. Aromas: sweet, floral, tropical fruit, mango, herbal undertones. Effects: uplifting, euphoric, long-lasting cerebral high.

The overall terpene profile ranges from earthy spice to bright tropical fruit with herbal notes, producing clean, stimulating psychoactive effects.

Conservation Status

High conservation priority. The population faces genetic bottlenecks due to selective male plant culling and modern cultivation practices. A dedicated breeding project is underway to cultivate sufficient male plants in controlled, remote conditions, aiming to produce stabilized seed stock for distribution to local farmers while preserving the original genetic lineage.
