Ban Bua 'Squirrel Tail' Selection 2024 is a domesticate landrace cannabis accession from Ban Bua, Kut Bak plateau, Phu Phan Mountains, Sakhon Nakhon Province, Isan, Northeastern Thailand. This selection represents the Squirrel Tail phenotype of the Lao-Isan landrace, maintained through traditional open-pollination methods by multiple local farmers. Plants are cultivated for recreational and medicinal use, characterized by tall, narrow-leaf sativa morphology, foxtailed flowers, and high resin production.

This accession is part of conservation and documentation work by Éloïse and Isabella of the Zomia Collective, aimed at preserving the genetic diversity of traditional cannabis populations in Northeastern Thailand. Seeds were collected at Point of Origin and stored in the Zomia Genetic Library.

Geography

The Ban Bua farm is situated in Ban Bua on the Kut Bak plateau within the Phu Phan Mountains of Sakhon Nakhon Province, Thailand. The region experiences a warm, dry climate with fertile soils, and an average elevation of 200 meters. Geographic isolation has helped preserve this landrace from hybrid contamination.

Collection Details

Ban Bua 'Squirrel Tail' Selection 2024 was collected by Éloïse and Isabella of the Zomia Collective from a farmer in the Bua village community. The accession was collected using open-pollination to maintain genetic integrity. Subsequent selections in 2025 included both Tiger Tail and Squirrel Tail phenotypes to ensure preservation of the population’s distinct traits.

Botanical Characteristics

Plants reach 2-3 meters in height, with narrow leaves and nine leaflets per leaf. Growth follows a Christmas tree pattern, with foxtailed flowers displaying high resin content. Flowering occurs over 18-24 weeks under a short-day photoperiod. Squirrel Tail phenotypes are delicate with elongated colas, sweet and tropical terpene profiles, and clean, uplifting psychoactive effects. Tiger Tail phenotypes remain present in the population, with robust colas and earthy, woody aromatics.

Conservation Status

Ban Bua 'Squirrel Tail' Selection is considered high priority for conservation. While seed stock is currently available, pressures from modern agriculture, male plant culling, and shifting cultural practices threaten genetic stability. Ongoing Zomia Collective programs aim to stabilize male populations, maintain genetic diversity, and support local farmers in preserving this unique landrace for future generations.
