Ban Phaeng 'Amanda's Farm' General Population 2024 is a short-day Lao-Isan landrace cannabis accession originating from Ban Paeng district along the Mekong River in Nakhon Phanom Province, Isan, Thailand. This domesticated population represents an open-pollinated general population, maintained to preserve phenotypic diversity and traditional genetics.
This accession forms part of ongoing conservation efforts by Isabella of the Zomia Collective, who document and preserve traditional cannabis populations of Northeastern Thailand. Seeds were collected at point of origin and stored in the Zomia Genetic Library to safeguard genetic integrity.
Geography
The accession grows on riverbanks, islands, and fertile lowlands along the Mekong River in Ban Paeng district, Nakhon Phanom, at elevations ranging from 150 to 200 meters. The warm, seasonally dry climate and well-drained alluvial soils support tall sativa morphology and a short-day flowering response.
Collection Details
Ban Phaeng 'Amanda's Farm' General Population was collected in 2025 by Isabella. Seeds were sourced from mutual friends of Zomia Collective and Amanda. Both Tiger Tail (Hang Suea) and Squirrel Tail (Hang Krarok) phenotypes were sampled. Seeds were harvested at peak maturity, cleaned, and vacuum-sealed before being stored in the Zomia Genetic Library to maintain viability.
Botanical Characteristics
The Ban Phaeng population is characterized by tall, narrow-leaf morphology with long internodal spacing, strong lateral branching, and high resin production. Plants reach 2–3 meters in height.
Tiger Tail (Hang Suea): Robust phenotype with thick colas, strong lateral branching, and dense trichome coating. Aromas are earthy spice, herbal musk, and woody undertones. Psychoactive effects are clear-headed, energizing, and ideal for daytime use.
Squirrel Tail (Hang Krarok): Delicate, elongated phenotype with cascading, foxtail-like colas. Aromas are sweet, floral, tropical fruit, and mango. Effects are uplifting, euphoric, and long-lasting, reflecting classic Mekong sativa characteristics.
Conservation Status
High conservation priority. The Ban Phaeng landrace faces a genetic bottleneck due to decreasing cultivation and introgression from modern hybrids. Ongoing conservation and seed banking projects aim to preserve this historically significant Lao-Isan landrace and ensure the survival of both Tiger Tail and Squirrel Tail expressions.
