Ban Nan Toeng General Population 2024 is a general population domesticate landrace accession documented in Thailand by Eloise and Isabella. Seeds were sourced from the Nan Toeng Village Community in Ban Nan Toeng, within the Phu Phan Mountains of Sakhon Nakhon Province. This accession represents the broad Lao-Isan landrace population cultivated using traditional open-pollination methods.
Geography
This accession originates from the Phu Phan Mountains in Sakhon Nakhon Province, in Isan, Thailand. Ban Nan Toeng lies on the edge of the Kut Bak plateau at 200 meters elevation. The region experiences a monsoonal growing cycle with dry-season harvests.
Collection Details
Seeds were collected in 2024 from the standing general population grown by the Nan Toeng Village Community. Collection reflects the full genetic spectrum present in the field, maintained through direct seeding and traditional open-pollination practices.
Botanical Characteristics
Plants display classic Lao-Isan narrow-leaf morphology with tall, elegant structure and long internodal spacing. Heights range between 2–3 meters. Flowering occurs under short-day conditions.
Two primary phenotypic expressions are present within the population:
Tiger Tail (Hang Suea): Dense, robust structure with strong lateral branching and heavy resin production.
Squirrel Tail (Hang Krarok): Elongated, Foxtailed expressions with lighter, more Airy flower development.
Flower Structure across the broader population ranges from Loose to Foxtailed depending on phenotype.
The terpene spectrum spans earthy spice, herbal musk, woody undertones, and bright sweet tropical fruit notes including mango. Effects are described as clean, stimulating, long-lasting, and culturally valued for both recreational and medicinal use.
Cultivation Details
Regional Planting: July - September
Regional Harvest: January - March
Height: 2–3 meters
Classification: NLD type landrace accession
Plants are grown outdoors through direct seeding, with seeds produced via traditional open-pollination.
Conservation Status
The population remains active and viable; however, increased male culling and a shift toward seedless flower production are creating genetic bottlenecks. A conservation breeding initiative is planned to reintroduce a larger male population and stabilize seed stock for long-term resilience.
