Ban Phaeng General Population 2024 is a short-day Lao‑Isan landrace cannabis accession originating from villages in Ban Phaeng District of Nakhon Phanom Province, Isan, Thailand. The accession represents an open‑pollinated general population cultivated by traditional farmers along the Mekong River basin.

Historically, this region was part of one of Thailand’s most famous Thai‑Stick producing corridors during the 1970s and 1980s. Cannabis grown along the Mekong riverbanks was known for tall sativa morphology, high resin production, and distinctive terpene profiles combining earthy spice with bright tropical fruit. Seeds for this accession were collected at Point of Origin by Isabella as part of the Zomia Collective’s ongoing documentation and conservation of threatened Lao‑Isan landrace populations.

Geography

The accession originates from the floodplains and river terraces of the Mekong River surrounding Ban Phaeng in Nakhon Phanom Province, Isan, Thailand. The region experiences a tropical monsoon climate with a pronounced dry season and fertile alluvial soils that support tall narrow‑leaf cannabis populations.

Collection Details

The Ban Paeng General Population was collected in 2025 by Isabella of the Zomia Collective. Seeds were sourced directly from traditional farmers along the Mekong riverbanks and islands of Ban Paeng district, ensuring point-of-origin preservation. Seeds were selected form multiple plants across the entire field to capture the full phenotypic diversity of the population, including both “Tiger Tail” (Hang Suea) and “Squirrel Tail” (Hang Krarok) expressions thu smaking it a "General Population". Seeds were harvested at peak maturity, carefully cleaned, and stored in vacuum-sealed bags at the Zomia Genetic Library to maintain viability.

Botanical Characteristics

The Ban Phaeng landrace exhibits classic Lao‑Isan narrow‑leaf morphology with tall plants, long internodal spacing, and strong branching structure. Mature plants typically reach 2–3 meters in height and produce highly resinous flowers adapted to tropical photoperiod conditions.

Two primary phenotypic expressions are present:

  • Tiger Tail (Hang Suea): Robust plants with thicker colas, strong lateral branching, and dense trichome coverage. Aromas are dominated by earthy spice, herbal musk, and woody undertones. Psychoactive effects are clear‑headed, energetic, and stimulating.
  • Squirrel Tail (Hang Krarok): More delicate plants with elongated, foxtailing flower structures. Aromas lean toward sweet floral and tropical fruit notes, often with mango characteristics. Effects are uplifting and euphoric with long‑lasting cerebral stimulation.

Conservation Status

High conservation priority. Traditional cannabis cultivation along the Mekong River has declined significantly due to economic shifts and the introduction of modern hybrid varieties. As older farmers retire and fewer younger growers continue the practice, the Ban Phaeng landrace faces increasing risk of genetic erosion. Seeds preserved in the Zomia Genetic Library serve as an important safeguard for this historically significant Lao‑Isan population.
