Thailand (Thai: ประเทศไทย, Prathet Thai [prà.tʰêːt tʰāj]) has a long history of cannabis use for medicinal, ritual, and culinary purposes. Cannabis (Thai: กัญชา, kancha; colloquially กัญชง, kanchong for hemp) appears in traditional Thai medicine texts and has been used historically in remedies, tonics, and local therapies. Modern recognition of cannabis as a therapeutic herb began with the 2018 Medical Cannabis Act, which made Thailand the first Asian nation to legalize medical cannabis.
Large‑scale cultivation for medical purposes is overseen by the Thai Food and Drug Administration (FDA), while low‑THC hemp varieties are legally grown for industrial uses. Between 2022 and 2025, Thailand briefly decriminalized cannabis, allowing widespread commercial sales and public access. However, in June 2025, cannabis flowers were reclassified as a controlled herb, restricting legal use to patients with prescriptions from licensed medical practitioners. Unlicensed cultivation, sale, or possession carries penalties including fines and imprisonment.
