Ban Nan Toeng 'Elite' Selection #6 2024 is a short-day landrace cannabis accession originating from Ban Nan Toeng in the Phu Phan Mountains of Sakhon Nakhon Province, Isan, Thailand. This domesticated Lao-Isan population represents a selected female from an open-pollinated general population. Plants display narrow leaves, a Christmas tree growth pattern, and foxtailing flower structures, reaching 2–3 meters in height with an 18–24 week flowering cycle.

This accession forms part of a broader preservation initiative focused on conserving traditional cannabis populations of Northeastern Thailand. Seeds were collected at Point of Origin and are maintained within the Zomia Genetic Library to safeguard genetic diversity.

Geography

The accession was documented in Ban Nan Toeng, situated within Phu Phan District in the Phu Phan Mountains of Isan, Thailand. Elevations range between 200–400 meters above sea level. The region’s warm, seasonally dry climate and well-drained soils have shaped the tall, elegant morphology and short-day flowering response typical of this Lao-Isan landrace.

Collection Details

Collected in 2024 by Éloïse and Isabella, this accession represents a selection from an open-pollinated general population cultivated by the Nan Toeng Village Community. The population shows minimal introgression and retains its characteristic regional traits.

Regional planting occurs from July to September, with harvest between January and March. Cultivation remains active, with an estimated population of approximately 10,000 plants in the area.

Botanical Characteristics

The Ban Nan Toeng population is characterized by tall, narrow-leaf morphology with long internodal spacing and strong lateral branching. Plants reach 2–3 meters and exhibit high resin production.

Two primary phenotypic expressions occur within the population:

Tiger Tail (Hang Suea): A robust expression featuring thicker colas, strong branching, and dense trichome coverage. Aromatics lean toward earthy spice, herbal musk, and woody undertones. Effects are clear-headed, energizing, and suitable for daytime use.

Squirrel Tail (Hang Krarok): A more elongated expression producing cascading, foxtail-like colas with lighter, airier flowers. Aromas display sweet floral notes, mango, and tropical fruit. Effects are uplifting and long-lasting, reflecting classic Mekong sativa qualities.

The overall terpene spectrum ranges from earthy spice to bright tropical sweetness, with mango and herbal overtones common across the population.

Conservation Status

This accession is designated high conservation priority due to increasing genetic bottlenecks within the region. The growing preference for seedless flower production has resulted in excessive male culling, reducing effective pollination and narrowing genetic diversity.

Conservation breeding initiatives are being developed to reintroduce larger male populations in controlled environments, with the goal of producing stabilized seed stock for distribution to local farmers. These efforts aim to maintain the long-term resilience and continuity of this historic Lao-Isan landrace.
