Khun Aek Farm 'Squirrel Tail' Selection 2024 is a short-day Lao-Isan landrace cannabis accession originating from Ban Nan Toeng in the Phu Phan Mountains, Sakhon Nakhon Province, Isan, Thailand. This domesticated population was collected at Point of Origin and represents a selected expression of the traditional Squirrel Tail (Hang Krarok) phenotype. Seeds were gathered and preserved by Isabella of the Zomia Collective, supporting ongoing documentation and conservation efforts.

Geography

The accession is cultivated in the remote valleys of the Phu Phan Mountains at approximately 200 meters elevation. The region's warm, seasonally dry climate and fertile mountain soils favor tall sativa morphology and high resin production. The farm's isolation has helped maintain genetic purity with minimal introgression.

Collection Details

Khun Aek Farm 'Squirrel Tail' Selection was collected in March 2025 by Isabella directly from the farmer, Khun Aek. Seeds were obtained from multiple plants on the farm exhibiting the most distinct Squirrel Tail characteristics, using traditional open-pollination methods. The population remains actively cultivated with direct seeding and seasonal planting from July to September and harvest from January to March. The farm continues to maintain both Tiger Tail and Squirrel Tail phenotypes, with selective breeding applied to preserve distinct traits while maintaining genetic diversity.

Botanical Characteristics

Plants reach 2–3 meters in height with narrow leaves and long internodal spacing. Two primary phenotypic expressions occur:

Tiger Tail (Hang Suea): Bold, robust structure with thick colas, strong lateral branching, dense trichomes. Aromas: earthy spice, herbal musk, woody undertones. Effects: clear-headed, energizing, ideal for daytime use.

Squirrel Tail (Hang Krarok): Delicate, elongated, foxtail-like colas. Aromas: sweet, floral, tropical fruit, mango, herbal undertones. Effects: uplifting, euphoric, long-lasting, classic Mekong sativa cerebral high.

Overall terpene profile ranges from earthy spice to bright tropical fruit with herbal nuances, producing clean, stimulating psychoactive effects.

Conservation Status

High conservation priority. The Khun Aek population is maintained through traditional farming and open-pollination, ensuring continued preservation of the Squirrel Tail phenotype. Despite pressures from modern agriculture and cultural shifts, seeds remain available, contributing to Zomia Collective’s long-term conservation efforts.
