Kirivong (ស្រុកកិរីវង់) is a district (srok) of Takeo province, Cambodia, bordering Vietnam to the south and east. The district is defined by the Bayong Kor mountain range, a low forested range that runs along the Vietnamese border and constitutes the primary centre of landrace cannabis cultivation in Cambodia.
For documentation of cannabis cultivation, growing practices and eradication campaigns in the district, see the main growing area article: Kirivong.
Geography
Kirivong district occupies the southeastern corner of Takeo province. The Bayong Kor mountains form its dominant geographic feature, rising from the lowland rice paddies (~50 m) to approximately 400 m. The range spans four communes: Preah Bat Choan Chum, Prey Ampok, Som and Kiri Chung Koh.[1]
The district's border with Vietnam's Tay Ninh and Long An provinces makes it a natural corridor for cross-border trade. Police reports describe the terrain as "ideal for growing marijuana and smuggling to Vietnam."[1]
Administration
Kirivong district comprises multiple communes (khum), of which four in the Bayong Kor range are consistently identified in enforcement reports as centres of cannabis cultivation: Preah Bat Choan Chum, Prey Ampok, Som and Kiri Chung Koh.[1][2]
Cannabis in Kirivong
Main article: Kirivong
Cannabis cultivation in Kirivong is a multi-generational practice. Provincial police chief Chheang Phannara confirmed in 2021 that growing marijuana in Preah Bat Choan Chum commune "is not a new practice and it has been going on for many generations."[2] The district is the primary target of Cambodia's annual eradication campaigns, with hundreds of thousands of plants destroyed annually across dispersed mountain plots.
Dried marijuana from Kirivong sells at the farm gate for US$35–40 per kilogram to Vietnamese traders, with secondary domestic distribution to Kampot, Sihanoukville and Phnom Penh.[2]
